How do you loosen a leather sheath?

I just got a leather sheath for my SYKCO 311. The knife fits good, but the draw is tight. What’s the best way to loosen it up a little?

Hmmmm my first thought would wet mold it ? Warm water ( I’ve heard some mention a drop of dawn dish soap ) soak up to where handle will stop. Soak like 20sec try it , maybe another 10-20sec soak try it. You don’t want to water log the leather. Once it’s fitting let it dry with knife in it. You could plastic wrap the knife before inserting.

Now wait until another with more experience comes along to answer👍 Cause I would not say I’m correct here and they will have more to add.

And there it is , see below.
I like Robber58 Robber58 response with the mechanical stretch with the handle of a hammer.

I don't disagree that wet molding could provide a better fit. I do it on most of the sheaths I make to ensure the retention and removal effort is correct. However, there are two risks with the process in this situation. First, the sheath most likely has some type of finish on it and some makers put it on the inside and outside. That could make it difficult to get to the right moisture content and/or result in a damaged finish that can look pretty bad. The second risk is that even if the sheath can be properly prepared with water, it does take some practice and skill to get a good fit. It is highly possible to get it too loose and have a different problem.
I would suggest the first thing to try is to get some pliers or a hammer handle that can be used to insert into the sheath force the leather to expand some in the areas where it is tight. From the pictures, I can clearly see bulges where the guard is probably located. I would start at the top and work down to that area with whatever tool you have, carefully pushing out on the leather to ease the fit some. It might take a few try's but it will loosen with effort. The thicker the leather the more effort needed but the risk of damage or creation of a different problem is very low.
Hope this helps.

Since the knife still makes it in the shesth, I might try a little water from a damp paper towel, not much, just a little. Work the knife some to help stretch the leather just a little.

I think part of the challenge could be the res-c of that handle boyh creating friction on the handle but also with the method I mentioned because it's not as solid as wood, G10, or micarta such that it would force the leather to shape a bit.

Maybe a leather conditioner of some type would be a safer bet? Like the stuff used for baseball gloves. I think the thing will lossen on it's own over time, but it might be a while and if you don't like the fit you're unkikely to use it so probably speeding up that process a bit is better.

The correct answer is: Don't. Pouch sheaths loosen over time. Inevitably, you will reach a point where you will wish the retention was tighter.

Note 1: I hate pouch sheaths.

Note 2: I love the little pouch sheath that came with my Buck 501.

Note 3: The little pouch sheath that came with my Buck 501 makes me nervous that it will loosen over time . . . .

If it has a welt a little judicious filing might help. Use a flashlight to look inside and see where it is tight. Ya can usually see a dent on the welt.

If it doesn't have a welt DO NOT do this. Too tight is better than too loose. A guy can sit and watch some TV and carefully put the knife in and out of the sheath a few dozen times.

Yes it will, when it does let me know and I can tell ya how to tighten it back up.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I wound up wrapping the knife a bunch of times with plastic wrap, wet the sheath down a little, and put the knife in there until it dried. I put a little cardboard at the opening to flare it out a little.

After it was completely dry I treated it with leather conditioner. Fits like it was custom made for the knife now. It’s still pretty tight, just not ridiculously so. Has a nice “set” when it’s in all the way and draws nice.
