Well for me you mod the useless for me Spey blade into something better. So I'll let y'all choose. Wharncliff or true straight spine upswept skinner. I hot a feelin I know what you guys will choose but I just wanna make sure.

Wasn't there a Hawbaker special, or something like that way back when?

It seems a very nice combo in a knife.

I didn't vote for either. My .02¢ says that the Yellow Handled Case Trapper can't be improved on. Again, just my .02¢. I'm sure others have a basket full of opinios.

It'll be an interesting thread.

I've used that useless Spey blade to skin several deer - keeps me from poking holes in the hide. Always good when you don't want to risk poking something. Wharncliffe puts a lot of strength at the tip, though.

Gish y'all. Your makin me second guess myself...almost. Looks like wharncliff is the clear favorite.

I haven't used a Wharncliff enough to develop a feel for them. For me, the Spey blade can work just fine for skinning. So I have to say its just fine the way it is.

I could be wrong, but I think you would have a hard time shaping a proper upswept skinner blade, and still being able to close it all the way without the blade tip sticking up to high.

I didn't vote for either as well. I think the trapper is just fine the way it is. But, if you are going to change it I'd guess a wharncliffe is the way to go.

Just out of curiousity, what are you planning to use to cut a new nail nick if you turn that spey into a wharncliffe? I've thought about doing the wharnie bit with a trapper or two, but the nick would go bye-bye when I reshaped the tip, and I've never had much luck cutting new nicks. Well, at making them look good, anyway.

I voted warncliffe, but only if the blade is hosed. If it's a trapper in good shape I say leave it alone also.

I guess I'm the weird one. I voted Wharncliffe but I would replace the clip with it. I like the spey blade much more than the clip. I've just never been a fan of clip blades but I'm nuts about Wharnies.

Something like this?

I wouldn't change it. When carrying one of my trappers, the blade most used is the spey.

That goes for the stockmans as well.

I voted for the skinner, but would prefer stock.
I like a Wharncliffe blade, but only if they are proportionately like the Sway Back Jack or shorter. The Wharncliffe Trapper blades are just too long for my taste.

I thought I was the only one. Perhaps I'm not the misfit I thought I was.
I do carry my Yeller Trapper daily and both blades get used, I just tend to use the spey more.

Ok guys I decided that I am going to go with the wharncliff. I know some of you use the spey alot but for me it is the least used blade of any. I always go for either a clip of sheepsfoot. That is why I am modding the trapper. Im gonna be doing it by hand, no power tools so its gonna be a long arduous process, good for when I am watching movies tomorrow. The wharncliff is gonna be about 2.5 inches long, a fine yet strong point. I have no clue how well this is gonna work or not, I hope it goes better than not so great. Ill let you guys know how it goes starting tomorrow.

A sheepsfoot will be easier to grind down.

What about a spear blade?
That would be an even easier mod?
