How do you open an Endura?

Yeah, I know it sounds like a stupid question (and maybe it is...) but a couple of weeks ago I bought a SS Endura and it had heinous vertical blade play. I only opened and closed it a couple of times, then it went back in the box to ship off to Spyderco for warranty evaluation. Spydie CS called me a few days later and told me that the lock was in fact messed up, probably from "flicking your wrist while opening it". This is the first Spyderco in my collection, and I'm curious as to whether the lockback is really that delicate? I see the Spydie disciples here on the forum talking about Spydie drops and other cool stuff but I feel like this is gonna be a 2 hand opener when I get it back...what do you guys do?

I flip mine out with thumb pressure only, sometimes I use a little wrist action. My lockup is still very solid. I wouldnt think that any wrist action should mess up the lock, it really isnt a delicate lock.

Flicking the blade open should not have caused any problems, that's how I open mine.

i put my thumb in the hole and swing it out, no need to wrist flick at all. although i cant imagine flicking it would hurt it? thats odd

The back lock is not delicate. Not even close.

My opening method has no flick to it. Just the thumb in the hole, and swing out the blade.

If you check out cuterylover's reviews on youtube, you will see him sorta fling the blade open, but not use any wrist. The thumb does it all, but the last bit of blade travel while opening is via momentum only. If that makes sense.

But don't worry about how you open it. And don't be a scaredy cat and use two hands. Just use your thumb and don't worry about it. :)

I wrist flick alot of my knives and have never had any problems, and I have wrist flicked the Endura too. I don' t think that was the problem, maybe just a manufacturing defect?

Did the knife have the play when you got it or did it develop after a while?

are you sure that's what Spyderco said? Was this a new knife???? I thought you said you opened it only a few times? I open all my spydies one handed, and with an occasional flick from the non-pivot end when I am bored. Never an issue.

Flicking your knives open should not cause play. Did this come straight from a dealer?

Flipping wrist should not be a problem, not by a long short, especially not backlocks. If you got answer from Spyderco, then there's some really incompetent person. Spyderco has really great reputation and I doubt they would be ready to risk their reputation with "dubious" claims in warranty cases...

The case "probably " flicking your wrist is BS. Guy ain't medio and making assumptions like that is really unprofessional.

But I open my spydies with finger only, due wrist damage I got when flicking my wrist couple of years ago. After that I've tries not to flick my wrist... Took me 4 weeks to recover fully...

I have to admit I didn't check the lockup right out of the box, but the knife was opened I would guess maybe half a dozen times when I noticed the play.

To answer the questions from Josh K and Smash05, yes it came directly from Amazon and yes I'm SURE that's what Spyderco said in no uncertain terms...I was kind of taken aback, but CS was awesome after they were done chastising me...

I like Spyderco but when you call them it always seems like they talk to you like your a knife noob. That is one thing that I can't stand, don't try and place the blame on me for your defective product.

Hope your endura gets fixed, mine still has excessive vertical play and its a complete replacement, guess if I want it fixed right I'll have to do it myself.

I've flicked my Endura to hell and back, with no blade play resulting from it.
Lock backs are known to have some up and down blade play.

I also heard that lock backs are designed to have some up and down blade play, that makes it lock up stronger in some way??
Like I said thats what I heard.

Okay, it came directly from Amazon, but did Amazon get it directly from Spyderco? Or was it one that someone else returned? How would you know either way?

Yes, inertial openings will cause vertical play eventually. How hard you slam the blade into the lockbar will determine how long it takes to happen, but enough repetitions with enough force will peen the mating surfaces sooner or later and play will result. The surfaces are usually not polished from the factory beyond the minimum needed to fit the lock, so such peening is usually easy to spot if you know what to look for, and I'm sure those folks at warranty and repair have seen thousands of such cases. Whether it is fair or not, if they get a knife with peened lockfaces, they are going to assume it is from inertial openings, just like they will assume that a snapped off blade was due to lateral stress from prying. Occam's Razor.

Spyderco's lockbacks are made for a lifetime of hard use and are not delicate by any stretch. On the other hand, I know a guy that once broke an anvil with a hammer. Everything has limits.

I thought that made you go blind...

I don't have an Endura but I have a SS Police, also a lockback. I open that knife by holding the spine of the blade and flicking the handle open into my palm. I've done this..... probably thousands of times. No blade play. Shouldn't have happened.

Agreed on both points.

No way should wrist flicking wear the lock like that, especially not that quickly. I've used my Delica's wave for months and months, and it has not affected the lock.

If the wrist flick hurts the lock... How do they justify the wave openers? They probably exert more force on the lock than flicking or Spyder dropping. Doesn't make sense.

My buddy has an old SS Police that he royally abuses on a daily basis, it's beat and scratched to hell and the tip is broken off from using it as a prybar and his locks up like a bank vault...
