Hey guys,
This has been bugging me for a while...how in the heck do you pronounce choil?
Is it "coil", like the coil of a spring, or just "choil", the way that it looks?
I'm teaching my son about knives, and I want to be accurate.
- Thanks

THANK YOU FOR ASKING! I've been wondering myself.

I say it like "choil" but "coil" does sound better. I'll be tagging along on this thread for sure.

I've tried to look it up on dictionary sites but they don't even list it as a word.

- same with me; I exhausted all means possible before posting this.

I'm not a 100% sure, but any time ch is the beginning of a word, it will always be a chop sound or a K sound as in chromium.

I have always pronounced it with a cha sound as in check but I could have always been wrong.

I've been doing the same, just because "coil" infers some type of spring or spiral, in some way....but, like you said, that doesn't make it correct.
- Thanks

I always say Cha. I also wonder. Tanto. Is it tan toe? Or is it tonto, like the Lone Rangers buddy?

O.K.....so, here we are...here's a term that we all use, yet nobody knows what the correct way to say it is. Hmmmmm...and we're the knife guys!:)

Interesting that Spyderco and agrussell have it in their glosseries but no pronounciation mentioned. I would assume ch but I'd like to know the derivation.

What other ways could you possibly pronounce it?

In both Hebrew and Arabic, CH is often used in Latin alphabet spelling to approximate a sound that to English speakers sounds like throat clearing. Chanukah comes to mind, sometimes spelled "Hanukah," but CH gets the sound better. This sound is often found in many Eastern Eropean languages, represented as CH, KH, or just plain H.

Have fun, and if anybody knows for sure how to pronounce choil, I would also like to know.

William R, what is your basis of information?

Are you asking about the sounds that ch can make or the word choil? If your asking about the sounds, the only one's I can think of are cha and a hard c or k, like cut or kick.
The OP (original poster) asked if it was a cha sound or a hard c sound, I answered that question with the limited knowledge I have of the rules of the English language.

For the record, I pronounce it with the cha sound, as in chop.

I always pronounced it like coil, mostly because I think choil as in choke is a stupid sounding word, and my brain immediately avoided pronouncing it that way upon viewing it. However, at gun shows, older more knowledgeable people than I pronounced it choil as in choke, and I felt embarrassed that I had pronounced it wrong in front of them.

"Choil" is pronounced with cha sound (like in "choice"), and the word rhymes with "toil." This is according to Webster's Third New International Dictionary (Unabridged (c) 1986).
