I'm not a 100% sure, but any time ch is the beginning of a word, it will always be a chop sound or a K sound as in chromium.
How about chauvinistic - is that cho-vanistic or ko-vanistic?

Tanto is in Japan anyway pronounced Tan toe.
I prounounce it tchoyehlle (the 2nd h and the e at the end is silent).
