How do you react when this happens?

When you get "made" by an NKP, what do you do if they flip out because you have a "weapon" on you. If I'm trying to make an NKP an ex-NKP what can I do?

Also, I'm looking for a good neck knife. The knife has to be (at the most) 5.25" in OAL. I don't want it to have a skeletonized handle. I made an earlier thread about the Tops Knives Ferret but only got one response. What do you think of it? What would you recommend for this purpose? Keep in mind that it will not necessarily be carried around my neck.

Thanks to those who reply!

I typically roll my eyes and sigh like one would with a child that refuses to learn, though really this has only happened to me once.

Not much of a neck knife man myself, but that Ferret looks ok. I'm not a fan of TOPS stuff, but a 1/8" blade should be adequate for neck carry.

I take up a Kung Fu stance and scream like a long-tailed cat in a rocking chair factory.

Not really. Just smile and say "don't be silly" or words to that effect.

If you want to convert this person to the side of righteousness, buy him or her a $6 Spyderco Bug to get the ball rolling. It looks like a toy, but cuts like a knife. Who knows where it will lead.

What would you recommend instead?

I usually ignore those folks and go on about my business.
As for the knife, how about an Izula with the micarta handles?

I laughed pretty hard .

...which is usually my reaction when people freak out over me carrying a pocket knife - Just laugh at them, or tell them to stop being an idiot, and walk away.

This hasn't been an issue too often.

A waitress once burst out, "oh, you have a knife" when I began cutting up shrimp for my 4 year old. It was an Asian restaurant and they don't have knives for the patrons. I replied, "yes, I do" and continued on. How the hell is anyone supposed to cut up shrimp with a pair of chopsticks? ;)

One other time, during an office b-day party, some one brought a cake but no knife. The lady looked around for a bit and couldn't figure out what to do. I hesitated to offer her my knife since I was trying out a new Spyderco Manix 2 that day. When I finally offered to lend her the knife, she chose to use a plastic knife from the cafeteria instead. She said she didn't want to get my knife dirty. The Manix 2 got a few stares. :)

I don't pay much attention to NKPs. I keep my EDCs legal and I'm safe when using them.

Like Powernoodle suggested, a small keychain knife usually works as a good way to show people how handy a sharp blade can be. I like to give out Victorinox Classics, they come in all sorts of different colours and people are used to them. I've given several Rose Edition Classics to a few different women and I was surprised at how much they use them.

About the neck knife, an Izula with micarta handles would be a good choice, or a Bark River Bravo necker. One of my favourites is the Fallkniven WM-1. If you don't mind the thin blade A.G. Russell's Woodwalker is really light and pocket friendly.

I have yet to have a problem but if I ever do I plan on something like:

It is a tool, not a weapon and it is also one of man kinds oldest and most basic tools. And I am offended that you think I am some kind of thug or killer and that you think I am going to use this inanimate object to injure someone.

That's my plan assuming I don't get mad and tell them to pound sand.

I work with a few NKP that choose not to carry a knife, but seem to need one often. Watching them open a box with a key or letter opener, I ask "why don't you carry a small pocket knife?" They respond, "Oh, i don't need one" What??? You are cutting s box open with your car keys!!!

As for a neck knife, I have recently been looking for one similar to what you described, and really liked the Blind Horse Knives Frontier First Patch knife, but decided to order a custom from JLT knives instead, with a slightly different design. I have one of Adams knives already in a different design and loved his work, so giving it another shot. I am very exited.

Just wait until they break the key off in the lock of the car because they have bent it from foolish abuse, then have to pay for extraction and key replacement...particularly on those new security keys... 100's of $ would have bought a nice knife...

(or dental work for those who chew everything off...)

I usually ask if screwdrivers, hammers, or big scissors are also weapons. Works great in the office.

If I want to 'convert' someone, I give them a SAK Classic. The utility of it, along with it's 'gadget-iness' usually wins them over.
