How do you remove microscratches from silver nickel bolsters?

It seems no matter what I do I get very fine scratches in the silver nickel bolsters on the knives I am doing. Even when I remove them with a hard felt wheel as soon as I handle them to get the remaining compound off there are new scratches. So, is this just the nature of silver nickel or am I missing something?

I use a clean and often brand new microfiber polishing cloth to clean the bolsters.

What I have done in the past is to sand to 1000 grit. Then use pink no scratch buffing compound on a loose muslin buffing wheel. The wheel also should be clean of leftover coarser buffing compound. The right buffing compound can make a BIG difference.

I had a similar problem with ghost scratches showing up no matter how careful I was. The solution is to first look for the scratches in more than one area and under more than one souce of light. If I am working in the shop take the knife outside or into the house and take another look, I usually find more scratches.

Once I am happy, cover in tape.
