How do you sand like this? Curvy blade, straight sanding lines (Neil Blackwood stuff)

Neil Blackwood makes tons of these knives, and many of them have similar finished that go straight down the blade, while being very curvy. I tried asking him for tips but haven't got a reply. I asked a couple of people around here too, and got a general idea on how it works, but doing it is a whole different schepwal.

I'm stumped.

Which part of it is confusing?
Perhaps we can help clarify.

Knife goes in vise/holder, with the tip pointed at you.
Put paper on your sanding block/pad.
Start at plunge, pull straight back towards tip.
Rinse, repeat...
 
I had another picture linked but it didn't show; now it should...

I guess my problem is that the angle of the bevel changes towards the tip, and it's confusing for my arm/hands/etc to account for that. He seems to be able to get perfect lines straight down, but mine always tend to follow the curve or mess up the sharp grind.
