How do you score a custom?

Tim Britton was a good suggestion. When I called about a stag handled slippie, he had a few in stock and I had one in a few days. He may not have any lockbacks laying around, but I'm pretty sure his wait time is shorter than other makers who've been mentioned, he makes a very nice knife, and his prices are very reasonable for what you get.

IMO,his baby bullet lockback is one of the nicest of his line up
It comes with a flat ground BG-42 blade.Crisp action ,good lock up,thin grind
It is around 3.5" closed

Vince, I have one of Tim's one blade trappers and a Bullet lockback. The Bullet is a really sweet knife, but a little big for pocket carry (at least for me). You're right about the crisp action and solid lockup. His knives are definitely worth a look.

It's only a custom if you order it, otherwise it's just a handmade knife. IMHO of course. So if you want a custom order the knife the way you want it, if you want a single piece hand made knife well better get fast on the draw.

True that, forgot about that. He does make sweet knives for sure.

I had Mike make a mammoth ivory doctor's knife as a Christmas present to myself and I love it. I would recommend Mike to anybody looking for a small custom slipjoint, I plan to order another soon.

Not to long ago I called P.J. Tomes to get my name on his list for a certain model he makes (fixed blade). I was expecting several months wait. PJ said he just happen to have made up a few of that model for an upcoming show and offered me one of those. So I got one with no waiting. Ya never know, luck is sometimes on your side.

I'm surprised that we don't hear more about Al Warren in these pages. He's a fantastic knife-maker, his prices are reasonable and he always has slipjoints, lockbacks and fixed blades available on his web site (Google: Al Warren Knives). I have one of his mini Trappers and it's a great knife with a beautiful stag handle. All that and he's a great guy to boot. Give him a shout.

Thanks for posting that! I just looked at his website and he has some great looking knives...time to start saving <G>.
