How do YOU sharpen your Beckers?

I just wanted to hear from people who use their blades a lot. What methods do you use for sharpening?

I've never been good at sharpening. Only recently when I got an EZ-LAP Diamond hone (walnut base) was I ever able to get something cutting sharp on my own. The Diamond hones DO wear down in efficiency over time.

Is there anything else out there that people like better for sharpening thick peices of 1095? I'm always looking for a newer, better way to do stuff, and sharpening is about as important a skill as it gets with edged tools.

I use a Lansky Guide system, have for over 10yrs now. Works well, doesn't cost much, and I can get them scalpel sharp, especially my BK2. I use it on all knives under 6", over 6" it gets the Norton Duo Stone, crystylon on one side, india on the other.

There are several ways out there, and depending on how much money you want to spend is the only limit you have.

Good luck.

freehand with a DMT diafold f/xf and an ancient ezlap 1x6 xfine that puts a good polish on things.

I use a traditional water stone, and fallkniven dc3. Also a mini gerber sharpener.
Although I do not sharpen perfectly my grandfather was slaughterer and he always said that the most important was the angle and stone quality .

What angle are you using on the Lansky?

I'm with Moose on this one. I use the Lansky for as far back as I can remember. It works well for me. Some times I finish off with some leather. There are a hundred ways but what works for you and is consistent is your best bet...

I go back and forth between sandpaper / leather pad and DMT stones. Moose - is the Lansky system convenient and effective for larger knives like the BK9?

220 , 1000 and 4000 waterstones for all my knives. In the field it's an Eze-Lap "M" diamond rod and a DC-4

I $uck at sharpening too. Matter of fact I srewed my 2 up so bad I had to have it reground back to a factory edge. PIA.

I just picked up some Arkansas stones. A Tri setrup. (rough med fine) for the house. Plus a hand held diamond hone for carrying.

Finally getting to the point where I can get an edge. It takes practice.
Getting better. But, some of us (read: me) are just stuck in the remedial class.

Arkansas stones and 800, 1000, 2000 wet/dry sandpaper and finish on leather strop.
i'm in the convex phase in my life right now.
works great for me.

Edge Pro Professional. It's easy to use and will put a razor sharp edge on just about anything.

Depending on the knife; I use a Lansky for the 2 and started free-handing my 13, and 14.

I was using my Lansky, but could never get it "hair popping" sharp. Than I bought a cheap 3 sided stone system, but I wasn't into taking an age to sharpen one knife. I recently bought a bench grinder and some paper wheels, and I'm LOVING them! So far I've only used the polishing wheel (I don't need to re-profile too much) and within 5 minutes of mounting the wheels I was taking my knives from "sharp" to SHARP!!! I got the arm hair "mange" from testing my knives. To make this "becker-relevant," the first two knives I sharpened were my BK-11 and my BK-2! I even got my CS pipehawk to shave! :D

What angle are you using on the Lansky?

50 degrees inclusive, or on the Lansky, 25. I find its good blend of thickness and angle to render a good working edge.

I use japanese 1200 and 6000 water stones plus leather strop using white and green compound. It gets the edge razor sharp.
