A very nice man has asked to purchase a knife of mine. I very much would like to send it to him but, he is in Korea serving in the military. He mentioned labeling the knife as a gift and simply sending it to an APO. This is my first time shipping overseas, is there a way I should go about this so we can avoid problems? I am a little aprehensive. Thanks,

Matthew

I shipped a katana overseas to Belgium on a trade. I did the same thing, on the customs form you just mark the box "gift". The katana I sent got to Belgium without a hitch. I would declare the knife as a knife or it might get nabbed by customs. Perhaps it would be better if you declared it as a collectible knife or some kind of handicraft.

If you have to specifically indicate what's in the box. . .it's cutlery.

We have limited experience shipping overseas...we use USPS Global Priority....our local PO takes the time to determine if problems may arise w/customs or authorities in country we are shipping to. UPS overseas regs list many 'quirks' that different countries have established...some even have limits on the thickness of the blade spine....(most all list as prohibited any 'dangerous' item or 'weapon')...kinda complicated if you want to do it right...I personally am fairly comfortable shipping conventional slipjoints that the common would define as 'granddad's pocket knife...lockbacks and the more sheeple unfriendly move into gray area quick....the designation 'tools' was recommended and has worked well so far...buyers in the United Kingdom and Austrailia have indicated Customs open their packages, but carefully sealed them back and the package was delivered without incident. One fellow in Germany wanted a 'tactical folder'...but after he checked with the local authorities cancelled order due to German restrictions...even tho the same knife is for sale locally, there was something about an individual bringing one in from outside the country...

While this is a 'global economy'...buyer and seller beware
