How do you slice a banana?

Often, I will peel back one lobe of the skin, and plunge cut into the banana lightly, so as to cut the fruit, but not cut through the inside of the peel. Then, once done, I grab each end of the remaining peel, and turn it inside out over the cereal to dump the slices.

It is a lot faster than it sounds, and faster for me than paring slices off of a peeled banana.

I do it a few differnt ways, sometimes I just peel and eat, if going into my smoothie I just break it up with my fingers, if going into my oatmeal I use the cutting board with my kitchen knife (already out because I cut up differnt types of fruit for breakfast)

It's a banana, not a cinderblock.

You can use a butter knife, a spoon, or maybe even their handles to to cut the banana.

I cut toward my thumb, and I'm not going to stop until I cut myself. I won't say, "I don't think it's unsafe, everyone is wrong," I'm just saying I'm not worried about it and that I probably will some day when I slice my thumb open...

'Til then, what I do is grab the back of the blade with my index finger, and put the bananna on the edge and kind of "pinch", pressing the banana further down the blade with my thumb. I think it's more controlled than cutting with the knife because once I'm almost all the way through I can seriously reduce the pressure until the edge gently glides the rest of the way through until I can just barely feel it poke through the banana. A knife would have to be air bleeding sharp to cut me this way... Or some kid/dog/cat would have to run in the kitchen make me jump and flinch or something.

Been cutting apples, bananas, and other food stuffs that way for decades and never once cut myself doing it.

Also, I eat bananas and other fruit every day at work, and I don't usually EDC a butterknife, ...so it's going to be which ever hair shaving sharp pocket knife I have on me that day. :)

You can get one of these at the grocery store. Usually in the cereal isle.

I'm sometimes amazed at how lazy we are as a society.

I was just curious. Thanks for all the replies. I like Kenny B's answer also. Like him, I've been doing it the "wrong" way all my life so I probably will continue, however, I think I might try cutting it the same way with a butter knife.

IF i take it out of the peel to cut it, i usaly manage to drop it and then the dog steals it...
but i usaly cut it on a cutting board.

Nope !! You cut it without peeling it ! Take a needle put it through the skin at a dark spot .Work the needle around to cut a slice without piercing the other side of the skin.Repeat uintil the banana is sliced. Then put the banana back in the bowl --so the next guy peels it and finds it already sliced !

Haha.... I saw that trick on Mr. Wizards World, back in like 1985!

I don't but bananas on my cereal, so it's been a while since i cut one but...If the knife is sharp and/or thin enough do you even need to cut towards your thumb?

I understand the using that technique with say an apple, but surely bananas are soft enough you could just lop chunks of the end while holding it in one hand.
