how do you split sanding belts?

i'd like to split some of my 2x72s into narrower belts for profiling...how do you fellers split your belts? just cut and rip? or do you have a more accurate means?

Mark, the tool and knife supply places sell belt splitters, but I have never used one.

I just use a BIG scissors. I tried to rip them but that didn't work. Gib

Someone here posted about a homemade splitter he made(very simple), just a short time ago. A search might turn it up. It may have been at CKD.

I use a commercial one.

Joe Bader told me to cut it at the weld with a heavy duty rotary cutter and then pull the two parts apart. Frankly, I've been too chicken to try. Besides, I have a small 1" sander that I use for contouring and sharpening, etc. so I haven't really needed to split belts.
