How do you stop?

I have been a member for 2 weeks and have spent over a grand already between this exchange and others, to many great deals to pass up. I will never pay retail, unless I really want that knife. Hopefully I can get what I put in to them when I sell. I still want more knives and find myself spending way too much time refreshing the web browser in the exchange section!

I joined only a month or two ago but I got the disease about seven years ago. If you don't get into making them... Then eventually you will realize that you don't want much. Just a year ago I had gathered the funds to get about $3000 of production folders and another $2000 (im in college so $5000 is substantial) on custom scales. Ever since I joined BF, I can easily say that my knife thirst is complete by owning something as simple as an Opinel. When you dig a hole deeper and deeper, eventually you look up and can't see the sun... Then you realize you have dug too deep. One other thing to maximize the chemical happiness from buying knives. Never buy more than one unless you're saving money, like a bundle sale. Space them out properly. If you buy three at the same, each is less enjoyable. Order three separately, and the chemical cycle of happiness will last longer. Anticipation is greater than the deed.

LOL I appreciate all the input! It's really hard to resist, especially when I find a bargain. I do have a wife and kids, and I'm careful about the spending, but the yearning for yet another knife… man, that's tougher than I thought it would be!

If you really want to stop, first you have t not come on any internet knife site, including tis one. The knife forums feed the fever. It's like keeping up with the JOnes's when there's no real reason to keep up.

Second, if you already have som knives, then you have "enough". When you see a knife, just ask yourself what will it do that one of your knives that you already own won't do? Usually the answer is 'nothing.'

I went through all that collecting before I did my great downsize. I sold off my Randall's another customs, gave the production stuff to family and friends, and never went back. Now I have a mantra, "if a new comes in, an old has to go."

The other thing, once I got married and had kids, it got a lot easier. New shoes, school stuff, soccer team, new car now nd then, family trips, all took care of disposable income. If you have disposable income now, then start putting money aside for the kids car they will need, as well as a college fund.

There's way more to life than knives, and it took a long time for me to find that out. Then I finally reached a point that I can look at the knives on a forum, and appreciate the knife, but I can turn away by asking what will it do that my knife won't. I've went from carrying knives like a Randall or a custom folder, to having an Opinel or SAK in a pocket and a mora on the belt and being happy.

It's like taking a drink, but not drinking to the point that you get drunk and are useless to your family.

I agree with T Schloz, it's easy to quit, I've done it hundreds of times :)

but seriously, there should be a banner on the forum that states "Abandon hope all ye who enter here" as it's what I call the Steel Virus, once you have it, it really is hard to kick.

I know a few, a very few, guys that just have one knife. But, they are not 'real' knife guys, lucky for them they have other problems/vices to help keep them in trouble, for me, I think knives is fairly harmless, albeit inherently dangerous hobby. But, I have a code of sorts, I never use money from my day job to fund my knife needs, I make folder sheaths, when I'm able, to fund the hobby, or, I'll sell one to get another, which is usually the situation. So my collection is small now.

Good luck fighting the good fight, but be sure to bring a nice knife :)

It seems that once you have all the knives you want, stopping is easy. My trouble is I keep finding knives that I want...

I tell myself after I buy this one then I will sell those 2 and rotate them out.I usually end up selling them to friends for a loss.I really want them to go to a good loving home and still be able to revisit them on occasion.Usually I end up sharpening my old knives for my friends.I think that if I keep the computer off, then that would slow things way down.I could block the Bladeforums website and spend more time with my family.Life was simpler and better before computers and cellphones.I think I have enough knifes to last a few lifetimes....
