How do you store your good knives when not in use?

I store mine in their leather sheaths, but after a few months the brass turns green and the green stuff begins to eat away the surface, requiring polish to fix it. How do you store them if not in the sheaths?

OK, everybody all together,
Never store your knives in a leather sheath for any amount of time!

I think I keep most of my knifes that are not going to see daylight for a long while wrapped in newspaper in a large tackle box or tool box and of course the 'queens' go in the safe and might be in special treated fabric.

Fixed blades always go in a cardboard sleeve and box if they came with one. Folders without a box are wrapped in wax paper and stored in a padded envelope.
I wipe everything down with machine oil first. All of them are users but I still like to take extra care and store them properly

right now i keep them all in a big cardboard box in their sheaths or closed. none of my knives are lookers, so i don't worry too much about how they look. as long as they are sharp and strong i'm happy.

but the blades that i work on are kept in a tool box on a sheet of that no-slip mat stuff. i need to get some silica pouches or moisture absorbers...some of them have started to discolor while sitting for long periods of time. not a really big deal, but a little annoying.

will the spyderpac really protect my knives? i have a knock off case, a kangaroo case, its a pretty tight fit to squeeze some of my knives in (ie Benchamde mini rukus or presidio or SOG trident) ive been thinking about picking up the kershaw or benchmade carry case.... are either of those a good choice to truely protect my investment in knives?

Never store metal in leather, leather retains water, I don't use leather sheaths and I don't use fixed blades so I don't have any problems :).

I've had the Spyderpac for a little over two years now with a knife in each pocket. No problems. It's to be able to "see" your knives when the Spyderpac is unrolled.

I don't know that I'd call 'em "good" knives, but the ones that aren't in use at the moment are stored in an Otterbox 5000.

I had that green stuff develop once on the bolsters of a Schrade Bear Paw that was stored in the sheath. That was disgusting. I keep them separate in that Otterbox now.

I clean and dry mine, then slip them in a cardboard sleeve and put them in the gun safe. No need to oil them in my neck of the woods where it's dry.

If I lived on the coast, I'd give them a thin coat of grease and store them in an oily rag in the safe.

I use an "silver chest" that we got for a cheap stainless dinnerware set. I can only keep 10-12 knives in it, but hey that's how many I've got. I give them a squirt of 3 in 1 oil, a wipe with paper towel and that's about it. I live right on the coast but rarely have had rust probs with my knives. Funny even on the ships where everyone uses stainless, my carbons are okay because I take minimal care of them. Really that's all that's required of working blades: minimal care.

WD-40 cleans and protects its all i use on my blades.
As for housing i have a stanley Fat Max 29 inch toolbox it's watertight
has a rubber gasket.
A military ammo case [they come in MANY sizes] is great too
watertight as well.

I use an old 5 drawer Craftsman tool chest (their cheap homeowner grade) Lined the drawers with rubber mats and brush a thin coat of Breakfree Collector on them. Best metal protector I've found yet. They'll be looking good long after I'm gone.
