How do you store your handmade/custom kitchen knives?

I'm talking one good knife, not necessarily a set.

Oh, I should point out that it's stainless, not carbon. I'm still concerned with it remaining wet, but it will be used heavily.

I don't mind the idea of buying something (as opposed to making it myself), but making something is within my ability too, so long as it isn't super complex.

Hopefully that's enough info to get started.

I always wipe mine dry after use and oil my carbon steel blades. After that I'll store them in the box they came in and set them where they won't be messed with. I have a saya for my Takeda Gyuto. You can buy universal sayas online.
 
I use a $2 knife block I purchased at Goodwill for all of my kitchen knives that are waiting to be sold or shipped.
 
I would only use a knife block that accepts the knife in a sideways position. Otherwise the edge will rub one way or another. Plus depending on the size of your knife it might be hard to find one that it fits in. My Takeda 240mm Gyuto is tall as well as my nakiri and wouldn't fit in a standard block

This is the cake knife I made for my wedding back in April. Now it gets used in the kitchen. The blade is 52100 and it gets stored in the leather sheath. After use it gets washed and towel dried. I then leave it on the counter for 5-10 minutes then into the sheath and back into the drawer. Some light patina but no rusting.

That's very nice Bruce. I thought about a traditional leather sheath, but I kinda want something a little different.

Congrats on getting married btw. I love being married. :)
 
For knives that get used daily, they hang on a magnetic knife block. Knives that I use every so often, they get oiled and put into a saya and knives that are put for storage are wrapped in VCI paper and placed into a box.
 
Oh that's totally cool. I could make something like that with rare earth magnets. My biggest concern with mag strips was the possibility of scratches (may be unfounded), but that looks like it would work just fine.

I believe this style has the magnets recessed from the back side with maybe 1/16" of wood. Great looking but pricy.
 
I keep my Wilder right in easy reach. Drilled a small hole, put a neodymium magnet in with some hot glue and walla! Quick and easy

I aways put knives in a knife block upside down to most people, with the edge up. This protects the cutting edge and gives a convenient storage place.

The one I use is horizontal.
