How do you store your knives?

In cigar boxes I get free from a pipe and cigar store near the office. Can't get much easier on the wallet than that.

Plastic pistol cases work well, about $10 a piece and the foam keeps a nice tight compression so they won't move around or open.

Hmm, the cigar boxes may work. I have a few at the house I can try out, maybe fashion a couple of trays to maximize the space.

Security should be your top priority. Find something that's lockable and not easily carried away.

Pelican case works great for me. I have a small collection so the case I have was only about $25 and well worth it.

I keep my big blades in a gun safe and my < 7" knives in a kitchen drawer, I like to use them for processing food every once in awhile.

My higher valued knives I like keeping in a gun safe with corrosion inhibitors as I feel that is provides the best all-around protection but it is also the higher cost . When transporting I use a Pelican case secured by a cable lock to the seat of my truck which, as Techno pointed out, is not that expensive. I keep some users in a locking file cabinet, ammo boxes, tool boxes and current rotation in a dresser drawer. I still haven' found the time to restore an antique machinists chest that I plan to use for traditional folders. Metal tool chests are often used for knife storage.

I would recommend the Pelican and cable lock for a smaller collection as it provides protection at home or away. For a larger collection you might want to consider a locking file cabinet as a cheap alternative to a safe. They go cheap on craigslist in this digital age.

I was given old foam cushions form a camping trailer and i wanted them to lay on when I was working on the car....but i took one, cut it down to fit in a plastic storage container and cut slits in it so i could just push the knives in....doesn't look super pretty but it worded well..I got the idea from watching this video...

Wow, thanks for all the ideas! I definitely check by harbor freight on the way home from work today. Also I didn't think about the pelican cases..

JOELSM, that chest is on point! Where did you find it?
Those prices though.. That would definitely set me back some cheese!

Old silverware boxes; the big one in the middle, bottom of the top pic was $5 at a thrift store...

They stack together nicely, and they're fairly inexpensive. I'm using 2 right now because my collection is small, but it's easy to just keep adding more and label each box for specific types. Plus you have several different ways you can add the foam (eggcrate or pick and pluck), plus the foam inserts are inexpensive as well.
