How do you store your knives?

I'm looking for ideas. As my collection grows I get more and more paranoid of simply having them in a drawer. I don't have kids but I have been unfortunate enough to have had a break in before. I don't want to stuff them in the back of my gun vault either. I'm a good wood craftsman and was thinking about building a nice case but so far the only ideas I have come from jewelry box designs. So, how do you guys keep your collections? Ideas please.

I just stick them in a pumpkin. when the pumpkin goes bad I throw it out and get another one, unless they're out of season, in which case I sometimes use a frozen turkey or a watermelon.

Good Burglar alarm first and foremost or awful mean watch dog. But I have posted mine several times and many may be tired of it, but this was my solution, you could build one to suit the size of your collection.

The case sounds like a great idea. A lot of companies (Spyderco and CS off the top of my head) sell those clear plastic stands. I keep my folders in a knife roll and fixed blades in ammo cases.

Most of my good folders are in a knife roll, my cheapies get tossed in a drawer, my daily edc gets put in my pocket, and my fixed blades are stuck in a peice of wood on my dresser and some are laying on a rabbit skin on a shelf. I also have a diplay case that holds about ten of my collectable knives that I won't carry. There are also many that are stashed throughout the house, and I keep a SOG Seal Pup and a Leatherman Wave in my truck. I am looking at getting another knife roll, mine is getting full and I like them for storage.

I had a nice antique bookcase with a glass door that is now full of knives. This is far superior to my "scattered randomly around the house" program I had used before.
I would suggest finding something already made that can work for knife storage rather than going custom. I also have an old wardrobe that is going to be made into a Buffy style sword and axe case.

Mine are in a small 3-drawer dresser I've dedicated just to knives and knife maintenance supplies and tools. All knives with boxes are stored in those boxes, with the boxes end-up when possible so the model labels can be read. It's far from ideal though, and it's almost full.:(

What I'd like is a locking chest of drawers with the upper drawers no taller than necessary to store knives laid out front-to-rear, with the bottom of those drawers lined with something cushiony that doesn't show oil stains too noticeably. The bottoms of these drawers would consist of curved depressions side-by-side and wide enough to contain most knife sizes. I haven't decided on front-to-back drawer depth yet...perhaps at least 3 knives deep. I'd like to store my folders out of their boxes and open...among others I have many Kershaw SpeedSafe designs, and it's better to store those open, plus it just plain looks better. Below would be slightly larger deeper drawers of similar design for fixed-blades and sheaths.

After enough drawers of the above design to store all my current knives plus a reasonable number of future additions, next would come taller compartmentalized drawers to store knife boxes, tall enough to store most boxes model label end up, followed by similar drawers for maintenance supplies and tools.

That's my dream chest...now I just need to find one...:D

I use a largish humidor for the knives that rotate in and out of my pockets. With a couple of silica de-humidifiers I don't worry about the carbon steel blades. Fixed blades and customs live in my gun safe. The humidor I am using is getting close to overflowing however and I am thinking about a chest like this...

although if I keep buying like I have been lately I will need this one...lol

As Much as you may not like it, Fireproof gunsafes hold a lot of knives and I personally have done 2 fire jobs where they survived with no interior or content damage! The only problem is that you have a tendency to forget what is in them, weight and bulk! The most affordable place I have found is tractor supply they sell the large Cannons in the 600 dollar range!

This is worthy of keeping my knifes. It´s on my dream list.

I keep mine in a wooden tool chest that was recommended a while back by another forum member. It is sold by Harbor Freight and cost $60. Of course, it is Chinese-made, and nowhere near the quality of the $500 one that you can get from A. G. Russell, but it is good value for the money. I am quite happy with it:

When I ordered mine it was out of stock and backordered so it took about two months before I received it.

Here is the $500 one from A. G. Russell:
