My kid got a glass pickle ornament like that from my aunt when she was real little. My aunt told us you're supposed to hide the pickle carefully in the tree... on Christmas morning, the child who is patient enough to find it gets an extra treat or present. Supposed to keep the kids from just tearin' into everything, can't really say it slows 'em down much in my experience, though

BTW we're German/Norwegian with a splash of Welsh... my aunt's husband is Polish... so who knows where it came from? I never heard of the coin tradition before but I think it's pretty cool.
