How do you track your knife collection?

Thanks for all the responses & advice, guys. I think I was making a more complicated deal over this than needed. I've simplified what I'm doing, thanks to the ideas posted here.

Off Topic:
by the way, we had another EQ, 3.8 @ 11:48 today; centered in the same area, almost the same depth. Seems like some seismic-stress relieving, but it's got some folks here a little more nervous right now. I'm currently studying geology, so, in a slightly creepy way, I enjoy these little shakers. ;)

Oh - and if California falls off the edge of the U.S., ya'll can't have my knives. I'm taking 'em with me. :p

I use a tree-like directory structure, photos and README files on my computer.

I have knifes everywhere in different bags, in tool boxes, glove boxes, office at work, office at home. Of course I don't have any safe queens, I buy to use and only own one knife worth > $200. I found an old SOG folder this past summer that I had forgot I owned. It's sort of a mess. I would say it's probably spreadsheet time for me...

Orca,

You might be referring to my contest from last year. I've been absent from the forums for most of the time since, but check your e-mail; I've sent you a copy of the blank form page.

Best Wishes,
-Bob

Bob - thanks - you've got a couple of details there that I'll add to my own.

Thanks for all the ideas, folks!

No quakes today!

Since you're worried about them being destroyed, it doesn't make sense to use Excel or other software or a notebook since most likely your computer will be destroyed along with them. What I'd do is throw it in a spreadsheet on Google Docs so you can reach it on any computer. Here's a link if you're not familiar with it: http://www.google.com/google-d-s/intl/en/tour1.html

I keep it all in my head. I prolly have approx 25 knives at home. I have approx 12 projects ongoing with DDR, Krein, and mostly with Reese.

you know you have alot of knives when you need spreadsheet software to keep track of it all..

I hope to have a collection like you folks one day

I write it all down in a book. I have the makes, models, descriptions, serial numbers of just about everything, knives, guns, electronics, tv's, computers, guitars etc... I carry the book with me in case my world goes up in flames or my house is burglarized.

Detailed Excel spreadsheet. Every knife down to the penny. Actually depressing to know that dollar amount!

NRA sells a very nice book to document guns, but you can add knives too.
