How do you use your Becker Knife?

Hello one and all,

I just got back camping, with my beautiful woman, and in during that time I brought my BK2, Kabar dozier folder and another knife that will remain to be anonymous and gave them all a good work around the site; battoning a crap load of fire wood (minus the foulder), feathering sticks and plenty of chopping too (agian, not the folder). This was the first trip I have taken these knives on, I am still a novice with being a knife addict, but have used them at my house in the back yard to split fire would for our patio fire pit. The bk2 is a dream knife, I love it, however, the outcome of batoning with the anonymous blade and getting to a point where I chipped a big piece out of the blade, via knot in the wood, made me to start questioning if something like that will ever happen to my awesome, precious bk2.

I will say that I am not an abuser, but I do like to test my knives and make sure they can hold up, however, with my lack of experience with knives over all, my question is if im being to rough on them? with the work I am doing, simple camp chores and batoning being the "biggest" stress action on the blade, is the bk2 going to chip if I come across the same situation?

and on that note, why is it that so many people that post pictures of their BK2 look completely brand new with no signs of use, mine looks great, but you can def tell that it has been used, the coating is smudging in some places, but not wearing off, while other areas, it is a lil worn off, but I like the look, every time I look at any minute mark on the knife, I feel proud of it and look forward to creating more. I do wipe it off and casually clean it, but not to the extent I hear some people do with their own blades.

So to those of you that have flawless looking knives, bk2's only, do you ever use them, or do you get all the goodies for them, micarta handles, modified sheaths and the works, to just have and envy them? I know I am really tempted to buy another bk2 just to make it look pretty, but I feel like that would be like hiring a contractor to not do anything to my house, this is my feelings only and don't discriminate those people who have beautiful unused bk2's I just want to know what everyone does with them and still manages to keep them perfect looking?

thanks,

Josh

p.s. I don't mean to step on anyones toes, ultimately I'm just curious to see if im doing something wrong. :D

How I use my Beckers? As hard as I can. I beat the crap out of my BK14 while batoning through some firewood. Had some serious knots there, not a single dent or even roll in the edge. I'm really looking forward to my BK2 which should arrive by the end of the week. I didn't really like the BK9, guess I'm not a big knife guy. I loves me some axe action for those bigger chopping or splitting chores.

Cross-grain batoning through 1" seasoned poplar? Not a big deal. At least not for the knife, I was pretty puckered out after 3 or 4 cuts.

I've owned my BK2 for a couple months and the hardest use it's gotten was a couple nights ago. I used it to bust open a coconut by smacking it with the spine a few times. I've pried and cut with it but that was the most fun yet. Just a few smudges to wipe off and still looks good. But it'll still look good if I baton it through a lawnmower.

Welcome, Leon. Good post, and great questions, all. I use the shit outta my BKT's. I have posted some pics, but since I strip mine, they don't show wear and tear like coated blades.

I wanna know about the anonymous knife. We have little to no secrets here ('cept new blades that Ethan's designing, sorry), and would welcome any info you can give. You don't have to paint it in a bad light, just tell the facts. If not, email me, I still wanna know.

How do I use my BKT's? As hard as the necessary function requires, without a shadow of a doubt that it will do the job, and come out better for it, on the other side. We recently took apart a car, with a BK3, an air conditioner with a BK2, and countless wood products, without fail. Welcome to the forum, don't baby or sugar coat anything Becker, Ethan will be pissed.

We own many knives, from many makers, and no one here will bullshit you about any of them, just ask. Post up some pics of your blades for us to admire, we will do the same. :D

Tune in, we will be getting back up to speed, soon.

Just yesterday went out with my family and friends for an outdoor BBQ . Used my BK14 for everything from chopping wood for the fire to opening all kinds of packaging and cutting onions , to lifting the BBQ grate and giving the coal a stir .
The knife stayed exactly as sharp as it was . I only had to wipe it on my jeans before cutting food . (the jeans are in the laundry pile , however) .
BTW , all the pine branches I chopped were filled with fatwood and burned beautifully . No wonder we have so many forest fires during summer around here :-(

Why just last night I used my 2 to beat the hell out of some stump roots that were just fighting to stay in the dirt. I was using it for cutting, chopping, batoning, prying, and digging (damn hidden rocks). By the end of the night a had a few dings along with some rust and dirt on the blade. Today, time willing, the 2 will be babied; sharpened to it's previous glory and oiled.

I don't think that many people, in this awesomeness that is the Becker sub-forum, that don't beat the hell out of their Beckers. Welcome to the club!

I got my BK2 a couple months ago. Since then I've chopped and split pine and mesquite logs for the fire pit, and also used it yesterday to prune the lime tree back a bit. Waiting for some serious trial tests in late may when I take the family camping. I cant wait to strip it, but trying to see how nasty I can get that coating to look before I do. Also have a Eskabar in the mail! I'm just dying to get my hands on that thing!

My BK2 has easily handles dry & green knots with ease. I was spliting out old seasoned pine & oak studs which were to messed up to salvage and the BK2 just traveled around the knots. No damage to the blade. Let the blade go where it will and it will by-pass the problem area. As for "chopping", though I really like the 2 the BK9 beats it all together. At least in my experience and that is restricted to 3 dozen trees 3-6.5" dia, grapevines 1-4" dia. and I lost count on vines and limbs. The Bk2 has proven itself to me a tremendous knife and can take extreme abuse. Have fun!

I've whacked the living hell out of many a tree with my old Becker Brute, all in self defense of course. My BK-2 will be given the same treatment. They will still be around long after they find my car keys in a pile of bear dung.

well,

Not to sure if this works...we'll see. This is my new BK2 and "anonymous," (which through this photo you will figure out), after work leaving one chipped and the other unscathed.
Enjoy.....if it works
