I know this is kind of a dumb question, but for a guy that's almost never put natural or synthetic scales on a knife tang, I must ask. What is the best way to round off the butt on a knife handle? So that it matches the rounded shape of the length of the handle (which i've done). Do most of you use a belt sander/grinder or mainly files and sand paper? I know some of this stuff is rather toxic and wearing a good respirator is a must! Thank you in advance. Anyone got any good pictured tutorials or are there any on the forums here with good colored photos?

Knock the corners off on the belt grinder, then with the knife well secured use an piece of sanding belt like a shoe shine rag and sand it over. Hope that makes sense. this is the only way I have found to get even round overs.

i use my belt sander to shape the scales square with the tang shape. then while holding the blade flat i sand a series of slight bevels on each side to start with then i switch over to the combi wheels (shown here at this link. http://mysite.verizon.net/ress6fq6/id22.html) i use the wheels to finish rounding off the edges. you can also try using a slack belt and sanding in the area between your platen and contact wheel. to get the hang of sanding without messing up a knife just cut out a handle shape on a scrap piece of wood. you can also use a sandpaper flap wheel if you have any.

That's how I do it also...

And that's it huh? Sounds easier than it is! LOL.

What are you using for abrasives? I like 120 emery cloth, it takes off material at a pretty fair rate, but not so fast that you screw much up. After that, the scratches come out easily with 220, and you're off to the races from there. It really IS pretty easy, you just picked the hardest part of the handle to learn on!:D

Well i use 40 and 80 grit zirconia belts. used ones for sure as the cutting grit isn't as rough.
