How Do Youi Decide?

My only question is: real Mammoth tusk... or "Mammoth tusk light"?

I rarely buy knives online (except from forum members), most of mine are cash in person. I’m with Shane - the knife finds me.

I position myself where knives are likely to be found, and wait for the convergence of right knife, willing seller, right price, willing wallet. Click - a knife that came with somebody else goes home with me.

I find myself reaching a sort of "plateau"...
I've been fortunate enough to find most of the Grail Knives that I wanted, and a lot of the knives that otherwise fit some perceived need that I had rolling around in my head...
So how do you decide what to buy next: if you already have the knives that you want?
The Shirogorov NeOn, and Benchmade 781 seemed to fill in the gaps in my meager collection; so where do I go from here?

Try to go DOWN price scale :^D

I go in jaunts with some sort of theme. Maybe a Maker, or configuration, or perhaps an old favorite catches my eye, and I run for a year or so with that. Then, I get bored and get into another hobby for a while and forget about knives, enjoying what I own. Rinse and repeat…

Simple. You don’t.

I’ve been there many times and it’s a beautiful thing. You don’t have to continue buying sh!t to hang out and talk knives.

I’m very close to conducting a big sell-a-thon and just keeping what I love. I’m at the point where something has to really knock my socks off to get me to bite. Occasionally I’ll see something come up that I’ve been wanting forever but it’s damn rare.

I don't find the knife, the knife finds me.

As esoteric as that may sound, I too have far more knives than I have needs for them.....so I wait until something calls to me. It's that simple - I don't overthink it. I know when something speaks to me. Sometimes it takes weeks to hear the calling, other times it can be months.

In other words, I am really not actively looking for anything anymore.
this sounds like a good way to do it. I like his comments, my biggest thing is trying to not buy out of impulse, but to wait awhile, and if the thrill is still there, then I consider it moved to the next level to possible purchase. I just remembered recently that I like SA knives and wanted to get one for a friend, so I recall seeing Swiza knives in the past, and looked them over again. Liked the designs as being different from the traditional Victorinox, but still have good functional tools, so ordered a couple….for my friend and me of course. ;) P.S- Will have to check out the liner lock to see if it easily disengages with lateral movement of the blade without pushing the button lock, after a video I watched.

I'm at the point of where I get really hot for something... And then I wait 3 days if it passes I don't need it.

And at this point I'm on the hunt for the one. And I'm considering liquidating 40-50% of where I'm at now to get it...

I have found over the years that this hobby is a bit of a roller coaster, there are times when I want the latest knife and there are times where I do not buy anything for years. I have also found my taste, desire and need for certain types of knives changes over the years. So as I sell waht no longer appeals to me I fill in what i like today.

If I like it and I can afford it, I buy it. As for affordability, that has 2 components for me.

1. I'm frugal. I've never spent more than $160 or so on a knife. So that eliminates a lot of choices. Unless I hit the lottery, no Sebenza or CPK for me. I'm ok with that. My Endura 20cv, CS Ultimate Hunter CTS XHP, ESEE 4 (amongst others) will serve me just fine.

2. Personal budget. $ for knives come out of my "toy fund". The toy fund also includes $ for firearms, ammo, holsters, extra mags, camping/hiking gear, etc. I have to plan accordingly. Granted, at the price point I buy knives, this isn't a huge concern but I do have to plan ahead. If I want to build another AR, I know no knife buying for awhile while I rebuild the toy fund. My wife and I are strict budget people in an effort to maximize our retirement savings.

Aside from knives which meet my basic knife needs or otherwise just catch my fancy, the rest are picked up so I can try a new steel, lock, blade shape, or collection of materials.
