how does a new knife look?

ditto here, a few days ago i got my grey caly jr as well and it was flawless. the knife in the pictures looks really really bad, must've been monday-morning lemon. i'd be ashamed to put that thing on display in my shop..... :barf:

That looks more like something you'd find in a 'seconds' bin.

Who's doing 'quality control' there, Stevie Wonder?

I just recieved my Calypso Jr. yesterday and it has pitting almost at the exact same location as the knife pictured above. Everything else on the knife is fine just a couple of cosmetic flaws on the blade. I too bought the knife directly from Spyderco.

The knife in the pictures seems pretty normal to me. My black-handled Calypso Jr. Ltwt. looks very similar.

Then you need to send it back too!

I have had $1.50 gunshow specials that are MUCH better finished than that!

The bit right behind the edge is not bad, but the part on the back of the blade is just BAD.

This is not a $20.00 knife!

How does something like that pass through quality control?

Also will they be able to replace it, they are sold out and discontinued...?

Oh no... Stop it, I was just gonna buy my first Spyderco, a Caly Jr. now I'm a little put off :( I hope you guys can get them to replace em...

The scratches on the Blade, well, reason enough to sent it back if you are perfectionist, but considering that the blade will look a lot worse soon after you start using it....your decision. From what I can see of the choil (where the edge starts), that is normal. The choil IS usually unfinished and these are marks from the laser cut.

But if you can not wipe those rust spots and pits off, it should go back immediately. That doesn't seem to me like quality control though. This rather looks like poor storage to me.

I've gotten perfect spydercos too, but what's pictured here are normal imperfections from production and they should not affect performance. I have at least 3 spydercos with one or more of the same problems.

I got a G10 harpy that had one scratch on the tang, like pictured. It was due to production dirt and each time it was opened the scratches increased until the grit worked out. Doesn't look great, but never affected performance. How do you return something like that? Its not a performance defect and for all spyderco knows, the grit came from your pocket not their production. Remember this is a using knife, not a beauty queen designed for collection.

Well, it's sorta normal. Every FRN Seki knife I've owned has similar marks from whatever blanking process they use to some extent or another. My Spyderco dragonfly has very small ones, almost unoticable, but my old G2 endura has a similar appearance in the same general places. The large scratch on the blade however is unnacceptable if it's bought as a brand new knife.

Besides the pitting I love the knife its blade geometry and handle ergonomics are superb. In fact I loved it so much I ordered a second one today. :D
