How does one make a Nordic (Scandi) ground knife?

I mean, I know the concept, and a way to do it, but do you all have any tips or tricks?

I think they use a jig in the Nordic countries....

What less difficult yet precise ways to do this are there?

Hi Marion,

I make scandi grind knives almost exclusively. I know a couple of guys who do them free-hand, I'm not that good yet.

I found a really nice, simple jig on British blades forum. It's just a couple of door hinges, angle iron, all-thread and some wing nuts. I haven't made one for myself yet though. I recently saw a jig that was very similar to this in this forum.

My solution was a little more low tech. I had a block of micarta that I mis-drilled. Using the disk sander with an adjustable work rest, I ground one side to a 12* angle and use that for a guide. It's kind of a combination jig/push stick. You can change the angle to suit your needs. I've made a few others out of some hardwood blocks, but I have to be careful when I dip my blades to cool them off. The wood can get too wet and swell.

It will still take some practice to get the hang of getting straight grind lines and making the curve on the tips using this.

Here's a few blades I've ground out using this method.
