How does the economy affect you ?

Hope your crazy politicians are able to put personal and bought-and-paid-for agenda's aside and make the right stuff happen. If USA doesn't improve, it's gonna hurt the whole damn world.

I graduated in 4th quarter 2000 - in the middle of the new economy crisis. Bad times to find a job.
I changed positions in 2008 - shortly before Lehman Brothers declared bankruptcy. Bad times to start a new job.
Now I"m in the last weeks of probation period on a new job again - and the whole world struggles with a severe economic downturn. And I don't care anymore.

I am a professional child of mother crisis. I know this fell beast and will kill her before she gets me :D

The only way I could lose my current job is if the entire program shutdown, which is unlikely but possible. Unfortunately it pays well below the poverty line so finding a second and third job is priority. I only have myself to look after so I can still afford some nice stuff. All my busse and kin knives go out with me on jobs and are handy to have and they retain their value well so I can always sell if necessary. I don't regret buying any of them.

It's sad to see the bad economy affecting so many people. Sometimes you wonder... where the hell does all the money go ? To china ?

It has gone towards propping up the investment banks that helped created this mess in the first place as well as paying for wars that should not have happened.

Stand by because there is a lot more of the same to come. Things will get much worse as the rest of the world economy falls into a big black hole.

Lets see, got hurt at work April 2010, when i got the ok from the doc to go back, they told me there was no work for me. Still cant find a job, have a wife a four year old and a seven month old (who has been in the hospital since Wednesday with croup). Have had to sell most of my stuff, trying to flip my 2 remaining rats to cover a b10 and hope that i can keep that and my skeleton key, but that is yet to be determined. If things dont start to look up im going to try and get a waiver to re-enlist... Its really rough, and i dont see things getting better anytime soon. Just trying to get a good base of gear and pray for the apocalypse!

Dont let this thread turn political or it will be closed!!!!

Listen to him. The second it goes any more political, it will get locked. Also, foul language and use of the jerkit smiley will not be tolerated.
This thread is already way OT for this forum... Don't make me regret not locking it down already.

Thank you.

It has been killing me sense 2008.
Hope things get better soon.I have been reading some stuff on a survival board and I do think I am starting to take the view of many there that thinks if it get any worse there will be a world wide meltdown.

some think this has already started. i sure hope not. think of what our children and grandchildren will have to go through

I drink a lot more than I used to, a lot more.

But I do think there's a lot of money out there to be made. I just gotta figure out how to make it. I think the key to making a lot of money is to find a career that few people can do well - and do it really well.

I'm still trying to figure out what career that is.

And, I'm always reminded of what Warren Buffet once said, "be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful."

I started my business as a home builder about 13 years ago. I have weathered a few bad times but during this recession I have lost more than I care to think about. When before I bought any thing that tickled my fancy without a second thought, now when I look to buy something I think, do I really need that and can I get by without it. I can't say that it's all bad though. It's moments like this that bring out our true character and we figure out what our priorities are.

Not good, the basics are becoming unaffordable, things like electricity, furnace oil, motor fuel and food are all becoming unreacheable and then they tax it some more. To save, I don't go out unless absolutely needed. Hot water tank has been put on a timer and I am constantly looking for ways to stem the cash flow.

It's survival mode plain and simple.

I first got into Busse knives back in the early 90s because they were the best survival knife out there that one could depend upon in the worst of times. Since then I began collecting them because many are just art of blade beauty. I teach high school, and many have been laid off around me, and we have not recieved a raise in 2 years about. I still go back to my original idea of Busses; I have the knives I need for emergencies, as well as the weapons, ammo, food, etc.. If they money is available, I might get a good design, but I no longer buy just to buy the next model. It has to be functional and well priced. "how many knives can you carry at once?" I think it will get worse; and maybe one day what you have is all you will get. preparadness is a virtue :)

I'm sick of being considered nothing more than an economic unit, human resource, or human capital! As a sovereign Being i wish to invest in non-chinese goods that i can pass down to the next generation.

Gold, silver, and federal reserve notes have no intrinsic value. Busse and Gossman knives do!!! Unfortunately I'm selling alot of my 'keepers' just to stay afloat......and it sucks. I may have to sell my wife and child to the circus but I am keeping the dog.

It is indeed hard times... I merged my company with one of my vendor partners back in 2008 due to that recession. We really haven't seen any growth in revenue in the past year, any new clients are only offsetting the existing client cutbacks. :-/ Our visibility has dropped from 9 months to a year out down to 1 month, or even days in some cases. Very last minute in corporate decision making these days.

The reality is that nobody has seen a pay increase in the past 30 years... unless you climb the ranks closer to the top. Sure everybody has gotten some sort of nominal cost of living increase like 3% to 5%, but that hasn't kept up with the rates we have to pay out. Over the past 30 years, Management and workforce compensation has remained stagnate, whereas executive compensation has increased somewhere around 1000%. And over the last 10 years, executives and the top wealth have robbed the world blind! I could go on a deep, deep rant, but I'll spare you. :p

I do know that over the last year, I have paid out an additional $2500 in gas for my car alone, double it for my wifes car. Fuel oil, an additional $3000 annually... Food & electrical are roughly the same percentage wize, and health insurance up 30%... add it all up, and we're talking low 5 digit numbers.... and that's a LOT of $$$. :(

Bottom line... things NEED to change back into our favor, or there will be riots in the streets or worse, a revolution. Hey... these things happen when the masses have nothing left to lose.

i hear ya haole,,im keeping my dog too!!:D

I'm gonna pimp my dog out! :D

lil foo,

sir you are so very correct:

"Bottom line... things NEED to change back into our favor, or there will be riots in the streets or worse, a revolution. Hey... these things happen when the masses have nothing left to lose. "

and the only thing that it takes to jump something off of that nature, is a shenanigan like the so called LEO done O/C spraying those folks sitting on the ground doing nothing and this comment comes from a person that retired with 30 years in the field.

Agreed... I'm actually surprised that the protests have been as civil as they have, considering acts like that.

But actually, we americans roll over pretty easily when you thonk about how France reacted to their retirement age being changed from 62 to 64 (or something like that)... they held protests that turned violent over a 2 year jump IIRC. And what happened here in this country when they changed from 65 to 72... a 7 year jump?!?!?

Yup... you guessed it. Nothing happened at all, except maybe some grumbling.

.

Everyone has been hit hard, I'm a civil servant w/o a raise in 3 years and nothing on the horizon except more cuuts in benefits.... Gotta stay somewhat positive, got a wonderful wife, decent job and great family and pretty good health. So I can only dream about owning the new AA or a grail knife like NMFBM or Team gemini. But maybe someday.
