How does the opinel fit into your kit?

Why not? It's light, sharp, and can do most realistic knife chores. You can can carry one as a back-up blade in any event.

Fits right in a pocket on my pack made fir SAKs, Opinel is my EDC knife. It can do anything a knife can do short of being a fixed blade.

The blade shape is just the right type for me, in my opinion it just might be the perfect knife

I have carried a #10 for years .
I can tell you that the blade will bend before it snaps , when youre being ... over enthusiastic .. to me that puts it miles ahead of a stainless steel knife ... mines been beaten back into shape a few times , as opposed to replaced due to breakage
they are a comfortable knife to use hard for hours , in my hand , no hotspots , I have had my hand raped b other folders .. not fun , but the opinel is comfy , easy to hold .
Recently they seem to have changed their manufacturing set up , their blades are a slight convex as opposed to the older ones that were flat ground , at least it seems that way to me , hell of an improvement , my old one was stolen ,I replaced it , and while I miss the old one because of the history .. lotta camping,a few times when I was that close to using it in defense .. the new one with the lock shut feature , and its convex grind is just that much better , made a pocket lazer even cuttier if thats possible
They are not scary to the general population .. at least they tend to scare people less than more modern tacticool ones do from what Ive seen .
Downside to them for me is , my wife and often enough whatever kids are in our care at the time borrow mine .

I totally agree with Loki. There's usually one in my car, first aid kit, back pack... I tend to keep my SAK for small knife tasks and the Opinel for food. I like to keep food prep seperated from the rest, love the Opi.

Mine has a spot nearly every where I go!

Light, locks, cuts like a laser!

My opinel was dropped from my daily carry because I fish out of a sit on top kayak and you get wet. wet opinels don't like to open easy :( which is a shame because I love simple tools . It has just this year that I found something to match it in simplicity and cutting ability in a svord mini peasant. I wish opinel would make a knife with a poly handle with out the gadgets and serrated blade of new series . #8 carbon steel and a handle made out of the stuff condor puts on the rodans would be great

My carbon 8 sees a ton of use. I just drop it in my back pocket to have a second blade. Like everyone has said, it gets lazer beam sharp, and you can do it on a coffee mug. I love how the carbon blades patina, how the wood handles age. It's a great knife to lend to people. It takes abuse too. It is really sturdy for such a thin blade. My lock did fail on me, but now I just twist it the other way and its rock solid again. Wonder if Opinel designed it that on purpose?

It's a slicing machine! A fantastic food prep knife to bring along on camping trips.

Stay sharp,

I agree with this very much, but I'd like to seethe poly handle in stainless. I have zero idea how you keep your sword from rusting and the same rules apply anyway, the reason that I want an Opi in stainless is the same resin that I want a handle in plPoly, I intend to take it fishing..

Yes sir, I've seen those.

I've also seen those nasty serations and the price, polypropylene is cheap, it should fall right in with their carbon or trekker knives.

Take that classic looking Sandvik blade and wedge it in some solid color poly without the "grips" and call it a day, it should look just like the Opinel color knives but not wood handled.

The only ones I have experience with is the older ones myself .

this is about all I have had for the last .. since I was going to school :)

My dad taught me how to look after a knife and I kinda just didnt do beyond keep it sharp n oiled .

this is mine :)

Guess this means that I need to buy an Opinel now. :) To think, I just bought a Mora Companion.... Opinels just have little appeal to me.

Knives I carry get cleaned edge touched up and oiled if needed nearly every day. I like carbon steel . The opinel will swell to the point of being hard to open if you are out in the rain all day, mine would anyway. The opinel outdoor has F@#$!ng serrations and a thicker blade plus the hole in the blade it is not the same knife weatherproofed

This is an easy fix. Sand the handle down to remove the varnish. Stain the handle to your preferred color (may take a couple coats; allow 24 hours for each coat to dry). Seal the handle with some polyurethane. Slather some petroleum jelly into the pivot area, and heat it up with a hair drier so that it soaks in. Repeat a couple times until it doesn't soak in so well, and repeat as necessary as standard maintenance. Your Opinel should be pretty well moisture resistant at this point.

I use opinels with great frequency, including using them as my primary knife on numerous back country trips.
I keep a number 8 in the glove box of my car, a number 9 in my tackle box, and keep a number 8 as 1 of the 3 knives I cycle 3 in my edc rotation.
