How does the opinel fit into your kit?

I've used a #8 carbon for years. One of my favorite knives, although I don't use it now as much as I used to. That's not because it's a bad knife though. More of I like other knives more. The Opinel does get used a lot in the food department though.

Brad, I live on the Islands and have always thought that if I'm surrounded by ocean, I must need stainless. I admit i've never used carbon steel much but would prefer it for the obvious benefits. You are from up the Valley ? Do you have any rust problems with your Opinel ? what sort of maintenence is required ?
thanks, Alan

This is an easy fix. Sand the handle down to remove the varnish. Stain the handle to your preferred color (may take a couple coats; allow 24 hours for each coat to dry). Seal the handle with some polyurethane. Slather some petroleum jelly into the pivot area, and heat it up with a hair drier so that it soaks in. Repeat a couple times until it doesn't soak in so well, and repeat as necessary as standard maintenance. Your Opinel should be pretty well moisture resistant at this point.

Might work except it pissed me off when I couldn't open it easily and gifted it to some one not as likely to get wet as I am

Yes sir, I've seen those.

I've also seen those nasty serations and the price, polypropylene is cheap, it should fall right in with their carbon or trekker knives.

Take that classic looking Sandvik blade and wedge it in some solid color poly without the "grips" and call it a day, it should look just like the Opinel color knives but not wood handled.

THIS!!

I'm a backpacker/ski tourer, not a bushcrafter. I've bought in on leave no trace techniques and rely on clothing and stoves, not fire making for survival. This includes tons of winter snow camping.

My tools include a Leatherman Ps4 Squirt for the small pliers and scissors for pushing needles and cutting bandages. In my pocket, I carry an Opinel. Very light, perfect for food, works wood well. Perfect.

While I would love to see a poly version, copious amounts of Vaseline help
