How does the price of a knife go up so high?

Well if were talking about knives that greatly supercede 100 dollars its almost always economy of scale or rare materials (really nice scrimshaws, gold, gems, damascus, etc) or perhaps both.

I dont think Im overpaying to get a 710 or military right at that price point.

Is that because of the inherent difficulties in heat treating and minimizing warpage after grinding, hardheart?
yeah, and I've also read of how some production knives are ground from hardened stock as well, for similar reasons. I guess replacing wheels more often is cheaper than lost stock due to warpage or cracking of pre-ground blades.

It's also influenced by the steel type and the size of the blade. Some are ground hard and some are ground soft. When they've ground soft, quench is critical to prevent warpage.

I would like to thank the posters here also. I have been somewhat corrected in my thinking and I appreciate it. I'll try to dig up an example of "the high cost of xyz steel makes the price double or triple" By the way I did have in mind the Becker BK7 / S30V as one example as that other post had mentioned. Although to be fair even as it was the same model of knife it did have a micarta handle which the base model did not [I believe].
