How does this forum work??

Kim,

Welcome to the forum. Good to see you finally here.

For those of you that don't know Kim, let me tell you a few things about him.
He's a retired E8 snake eater that has served in some of the worst places the world can offer. He picks up beer money by writing articles for Blade Magazine. He's also a pretty accomplished knife maker.

He's also a good friend of mine. Don't beat him up too badly.

it's pretty simple, read back through a half dozen pages at least checking for titles or headlines that are about what you want to ask about or use the search function. when you need somethign clarified or wish to ask something that isn't covered in the past posts, just post something and ask... much like you have here, read the stickies first for what is allowed and what isn't, but generally, common sense and etiquette applies. no swearing, abuse, name calling etc, and try to stay on a blade related topic... as a sticky says, nothing about the old car you had in '82, or was it an '82 car you had more recently???? check the sticky for that :P I can't remember :D and I'm not about to boast about my old '90 crapheap that is little more than rolling knife material now, as soon As I can afford a bettr, that ones going to be scrapped and the springs et al salvaged and the rest crushed :P

geeze... i go to make a cuppa with the reply up and return to finish and post to find two already up :P One from the high panjandarum himself :D with kit around who needs a newbies advice :X

yup, theres also a certain amout of "Ohh... Look I just finished my first knife! Whoop De DOo! I done good didn't I!?!" sorta like my fisrt post was :P I still ike my knife Even after seeing much better ones here :P

Hey Kim, welcome to the forums. Anyone brave enough to admit to being a buddy of Kit's is welcome here. :p Actually, he's a great guy. I'm sure anyone you want to give a yell to would be happy to hear from you. I'll look forward to seeing your work and hearing your opinions.

Since this thing will only allow me to answer the last MSG. If yor first knife cuts good and feels good, use it and when you make a better one in your eyes, keep it in a safe place. Look at it every now and then to see how far you have come kiwi

Kim, If you want to answer something form a bit higher up hitting the "Quote" button will create a post with their text included in a box within your answer. as to improving as I go Along I already have a 6 to 8 inch blade bull point hunter under way. This first knife was started and intended from the first as a gift because I though that the knives out there in my price range to make a gift of are crap, look good, but are poorly tempered cheap soft stainless. I knew even as a raw beginner I could make a knife that while it might turn out to look crap, would be able to out perform and outlast the cheap stuff. theres also the personal side of the gift, she will be getting a gift made by the giver, with her needs and her likes and dislikes in mind.

I wonder how many others entered the creative side of things lookign to make somethign to give as a gift or present to someone else when store bought products just didn't have that feel of something made by their own hands just for the recipent. even the "tacticals for troops" thread is about that personal touch....

Kim, Welcome aboard !!! Glad you decided to hang out and contribute to the forums. :)

Hey Kim, welcome! This is a good place. Did I pick up right that you're making knives now? If so, that's great! You've tested enough to know what you want to make and here's where you can find the people who can tell you the "tricks" for doing it. Because of the people here my own making has progressed much more quickly than it would have had I been working in a vacuum all this time. A more sharing and helpful bunch of professionals you'll never meet. I look forward to your comments and insight.

Welcome Kim. ;) I do enjoy reading your column in Blade mag. This is a great place and I don't know what I'd do without my daily dose of shoptalk. :D
