How easy is it to add/replace SAK tools?

The old Executives, Money Clips, and Ambassadors had single leaf, non stainless springs.
Going back a little further, and they actually is a window where they’re all stainless single-leaf. Early ‘50s into the ‘60s. The dates are all over the place for different frames. 74mm used black single leafs into the late ‘70s maybe early ‘80s, when the scissor style was updated.

The old springs are hard to find.
No kidding. Sellers often don’t get that a missing single leaf dings the sale value.

Why not try Heidi Shop? They have it for under $50 in red. Don't know how much the shipping would be, though.

Edited to change the available color. Fairly recently they had them in black as well.

... I am very grateful I have myself an Executive. Long story short - Fiancee's late grandfather's knife was a well-used Executive, sent it into Vic for repairs, told them the story, and they did me such a solid - sent me the parts back in usable condition so I can put together/display a knfie, and a fresh, clean executive with new/refurbished tools.

Somebody else said it first, don't recall who so can't credit them, but it was like, "74mm cost more than 54mm and 84mm, because it is Victorinox's hidden size. They don't want you to know how good 74mm is, so they jack up the price". 😂

74mm is great because I absolutely do not know it's there, but it still has tools. Basically, all the benefits of an SD Classic (you won't notice any weight change in jeans) but, in my opinion, more/better uses. Orange peeler underrated, I wish I could have one next to a hook.

Wonder if anyone made very many unique scales for the size. I know they have red and black.

Most likely not. Frankly I'm shocked to know they made  two colors of scales for 71s, given the dearth of colors for 84s, which are still being made.

58s and 91s are their mainstays, thus the most colors of scales are available.

If I compare it to the 71mm, it seems like there are no shortage of customized 84s (We're talking... custom Victorinox graphics, not custom-made, right?), and I don't even really love to carry 84mms, use them more in the house (They aren't light enough to be light, same heft as a 91). I got a few custom 84mms, actually, Recruit for my fiancée and Tinker Small (84mm Tinker) for me as we both love the simple white graphics on various Victorinox collabs with Finnish artists, hers to the left, mine to the right, in the middle clearly. There are a few more that I would like to have, as well as some others I don't know about.

I was going to list a few more that were on my list, like the Compact in donut colors from BHQ (been outta stock) and the Donut Tinker I bought for my mom's birthday - I just looked at it and realized it was indeed a Tinker, not a Tinker Small. You are very correct about the dearth of special options offered for the 74 and 84mm sizes. Pretty much classic red, black and white for those preferring those sizes, unless you want to go custom.

Because of this conversation, I was inspired to get a really unique blue 74mm Executive, because I need a second one. The one I have now, I do/must use very gingerly as it is sentimental to my family. That's why I find it to be such a great size for leisure.

I have both Alox and Stainless Executives. They are nice and slim, but they don’t have the scale tools.

This is the first I heard that the Executive has been discontinued. We'll, that sucks. The Executive is my favorite small or semi-small SAK. I've been carrying the same one since 1999. I do own a total of three of them; one red one and two black ones...and one of the black ones has been my longest-term EDC out of all my knives.

Actually the rumor was Vic was canceling the entire 71mm line, which at least also means the money clip version would go. Knifecenter no longer has any listing for it. Heidi Shop still does, but only in silver.

... it is my favorite small model. I remember reading posts from a long while back about them cancelling 74mms, but look at the Victorinox sales website, they only have the "Executive 84" in stock! That is not a good sign. But, the last alerts about 74mm line being discontinued were back in 2020. Stock is ceasing to be listed though, so... does anybody have any solid information?

Oh, and Tafkaag, speaking of customized 74mm knives! I scored this beauty of an Executive out of the blue! Trying to find info on who made the scales, very lucky to have scored this

My theory is that TSA regulations basically killed the pocket knife industry, and with it the most pocketable toolkit of them all, the SAK Executive.

Groupthink.
