Take the knife firmly in your hand and whack youself repeatedly in the spine with it.
Or, holding the handle of the knife so that NONE of your bodily parts are in the way of it closing, and the knife is out and locked, strike a solid surface with the back of the blade. Take every safety measure you can think of and then some. Gloves and protective eye wear at least. Also make sure that what you are striking agaist won't be damaged or damage the knife. How hard you hit will probably depend on how much you paid for it (the more the softer) and how much you love it (same as price). I wouldn't do this with any knife that was so much of a POS that I didn't have real faith in the pivot pin holding. The idea as I understand it is for a sharp rap, not an attempt to split the object you are hitting.

For small utility knives, I just grasp the handle between my thumb and the side of my first finger so there is no flesh in the blade channel, and moderately whack the spine of the blade against things, though it is safer to tape the knife to stick.
