How far away to stand?

I've been throwing for a couple of weeks now, and I've been standing 5-6 paces (roughly 11-15ft.) from the target. Is this a good distance to throw from? I hold the knives by the handle and they do a full rotation, sticking over 2/3 of the time (set of three knives, no less then 2 stick every time, usually 3).

If you're sticking your throws 67% of time after only a few weeks, then I think you've found a great spot to stand.

Stay there until you become very comfortable with your throwing mechanics -- then try both moving up and moving back to experiment with range.

There is a lot of difference in 11-15 feet. I throw one spin at 11 feet and 1 1/2 spins at 16 feet. You need to find out at what distance are you getting your sticks, mark the spot and stay there. What size knives are you using?

I have the space marked, but I don't have it measured. When I first started, I just took 3 paces, then 5, then 8, and worked it out to about 6.5, then I marked that spot and that's where I am now. I have a set of three 8 3/8" Colt throwing knives as of now, but I'm thinking about buying some larger ones.

That is a long way off to be doing single spins with 8 inch knives. I would think that you would be getting doubles unless you are a real soft thrower or using a different techique. It depends on your paces too. When I pace something off I do 3 ft paces. As long as you are sticking them, that is all that matters. You definetely need real knives. At least 12 inches or better would work much better.

Well, they are one full rotation, that's for sure. I'm pretty sure I throw hard enough, it sticks into the wood with some force. None of the sticks are weak, they are all solid.

These are real knives, btw...they are colt throwing knives. They are a bit small, but they are pretty well balanced and stick well. Since I am thinking about buying some 12" knives, how are the Cold Steel 12" Sure Flight throwing knives? They are only $12, so I could buy three of them no problem.

Anything would be better than little 8 inch knives. It depends on if you want to get into target throwing. I am still curious to see how far you are actually throwing from. Can you measure it with a tape?
I've heard mixed reviews about the Cold Steel knives, so I can not give an honest opinion.

I have been standing 13' away from the tree.
is this a live tree?
I throw 11" 1 spin at 12 feet, to throw 10" I step half foot forward and I step half foot backward to throw 13" knife.

Alright, well I guess I'm going to order three Cold Steel Pro Flight throwing knives. They are only $8 a piece, and will at least be decent knives.

That is a good distance.I have been throwing knives for five years now,it seems a lot of throwers use that distance. Stick with it and you will get real good at it, and be able to throw from greater distances.

Rotator cuff injuries put a real damper on throwing...:thumbdn:

I used to use blade-thrown knives exclusively, and experimented with adjusting spin by adjusting hold on the blade.
The knives I was using at the time were the old "Pro-Thrower" style. I found that a shift of about 1/4" on the blade corresponded to a change in distance of about one foot.
Move back a foot, slide the grip up towards the handle a bit.

Eventually, you can't go any further, and you have to go back to the tip and do more spins...

I've been using handle-thrown blades for the last couple of years, with just one grip. That means two practical distances....

I have 10", 12" and 14" cold steel thowers and I my opion the longer the better. I haven't thrown in awhile but got the best results throwing by the tip, half a turn and stick. I got out to about 25 and the big ones work the best. Pat

I have two of the True Flight throwers and I could not be happier unless I could get them cheaper. They have proven impervious to damage. Umm, except for the one I hit with a hawk. It chipped the edge a little bit. The only weak point I can see is the cord wrapping. It wouldn't take much to nick it and then it would be over soon.

I threw these consistently from 18 ft and they did one full rotation, they are 15 inch long knives and I threw from the handle. I stuck them in straight about 98% of the time. at other times they stuck in edge first.

DOH! Lost the cord wrapping on one today. I guess I'll rewrap it with rawhide or more cord.

can use electrical tape. really cheap, and easy to replace. Adds weight, if you want more grip for using, you can wrap over the electrical tape with hockey tape.
