I'd wager many of the best knife/sword makers of the bronze age asked similar questions 4,000 years ago. They asked because they were convinced that what they had at that time was the pinnacle of technology in knife making. And it was.
I believe before too many years we humans will find some way to specifically place the molecules where we want them to go. Instead of arguing about who had the tightest tolerances on the knife as a whole, we'll be arguing about who has the tightest tolerances with the molecules that make the knife itself. I also believe that we will find some composition and way of producing it that will make it tougher and more corrosion resistant than titanium while being harder and more wear resistant than ZDP189. It'll be some government secret for 40 years before we ever see it but it's coming and I don't think it'll be that long before it's found by someone, somewhere, if it hasn't been already.
