How far did they get?

I was recently looking at the 2004 Schrade catalog and noticed several knives I have never seen. Not too surprising since I tended to keep to the traditional lines of Old Timer and Uncle Henry, but I wonder, were all of the knives shown actually put into production and marketed? Not counting the special editions, OT's, UH's, Safe-t-grips and tools, I counted about 41 different flavors of the newer designs.

"Gee, honey, it's only 41 more!" :D

Codger, I think I have seen all of the knives listed in one web sales site or another. I've handled a few of them in knife shops. Radical new designs, for Schrade, anyway, that was going to pull their bacon out of the fire. In past posted messages, I mentioned a few of them I bought and tried out. One that I was not able to ever handle was the 'cable lock'. I'm still looking for one at a decent price. The X-timer series is my favorite, qualtiy knives that really cut, the grinds seeming to make the Schrade+ steel really perform well. Others, like the 'Badgers' and 'Clip-Hangers', were in my opinion, junk.

Whatever, for one reason or another, the products did not capture the knife buying public's attention.

I do not think the knives could have pleased many. That is the newer one-handed ones they came out with. The customs were nice, but were for a small market. The others? The designs (one-handers) were not impressive at best and the quality was not near anything to that of the other ones making one-handers, such as benchmade SOG, camillus, cold steel, etc. etc .etc. Not too mention they were ugly too. The prcies were not bad, but why not spend a littlle more and get a better knife (like a benchmade, camillus, etc.)! I think if they had gotten away from trying to change their image and had gone back to nice "hand finished' knives (instead of mass production) they might have pulled out of it. Much like queen. Make decent knives out of decent materials and do not mass produce. Just my opinion though.

Ive always liked schrade, but trying to "re-define" itself with those ugly designs was, in my opinion, not a good move.
