How fast can you open a folder?

Hardheart, exactly right. Opening the knife fast is not the end all be all. However, you say yourself that only once the blade is out can the knife be useful. If you know how to use the blade and gained speed in deployment can help your cause.

My best time is about three or four minutes. That is based on how long it takes me to walk to my car, get inside, and lock the doors. Whenever I find myself in a situation where surprise attack is at all a possibitlity, I draw my folder and carry it in my hand. I walk around with it that way until I need it, or until I reach a lower risk environment. To actually open the blade, add .1 seconds. So far, I have never dropped the knife while drawing, or missed a draw, or cut myself while opening.

Damn, it must be just me. Well, that or my proclivity to practice under the influence of Old No. 7. ;)

Fastest one handed opener I have ever seen. The flipper is great the movement - INCREDIBLE !!

folders make bad reactionary defensive weapons...

See threat, assess threat, draw knife, open knife, use knife... a long time....

perhaps a better defense would be a preemptive strike against an expected threat...

Then, the question becomes...

How quietly and discreetly can you draw and open your knife...

Today...it would be probably about 2 hours.

I would have to drive home because I left it on top of the TV!! :(

Can I be forgiven?

;)

Normally, it takes me at least 4-5 seconds because I have very deep pockets (no belt carry for me). But once it leaves my pocket, it's just a quick flip and Thwack!

I envy you guys who can belt carry. Must be fun.

Shame shame! Why can't you carry clipped to your pocket?

It actually looks pretty funny on me. I don't wear regular slacks or jeans.

Now, once I saw a balisong that, when folded and stuck in your shirt pocket, looked like a pair of Arrow pens.

That would look good on me  :D

Porky Pig (Warner Brothers) walks around fully dressed, except he's totally naked below the waist...

Ain't that a funny sight....

From my pocket, clipped, hand to the side (6" away)= 0.65 seconds. I'll keep practising. I have to get use to the Benchmade CQC7 clip in the tip down position. My other EDC is the Strider Buck Tanto and I find it easier to draw in the tip up carry. Haven't gotten a time on that one yet though.
