How frequently do you handle your "unused" knives?

I leave unused knives in their boxes or tubes on the shelf. I don't normally get them out to look at or handle unless I am going to start carrying or using one. I bought more knives than I have any practical need for. It was enjoyable at the time so whether it was a waste of money depends on how you look at it. I have for the most part stopped adding to the collection, though.

At some point I will probably start to sell them off. However, I don't have a burning need for the money right now compared to the hassle of trying to sell them. Some of them may be worth more down the road, and they don't take up much room, so for now they can sit on the shelf. Also, it gives me a pool of "new" knives if I ever get the urge for something different, without having to buy anything.

I've been using and collecting knives for more than 45 years so needless to say I have more than I'll ever use.
Anyway I pull the collectors out once a year and RenWax them and hit the joints with Rem Oil. I used to use 3in1 oil but stopped when I noticed it stain some of the older steel. I also keep them in a dark space either a cabinet or safe with silica bags all around.

Lol I don't have that many but I oil and clean them all every couple months

It is funny. I bought my first knife or knives to use hunting and fishing. Then I saw one with a better handle. Then there was the one with a better blade. Then my Grandfather gave me a few. Then I found some in an attic of a house I bought. Then..................
It's like the story of the Guy that walked in a Bar with a frog on his head. When the bartender asked what's that you're attached to? The frog said he wasn't sure but it started out as a wart on his ars.

Wazu, much the same story here.... always another one catching my fancy.

Added: Same story with firearms. Every one had a specific purpose, until I just starting buying them like crazy for no reason other than I wanted them. I've settled down a lot on firearms and knives are a lot cheaper to satisfy the urge for something new.

Almost daily, but then again, I don't have a huge collection, yet.
I'd say about 10 folders (switch on daily basis except mnandi), fixed (I play with while watching tv or bonfire making), and my kitchen knives are used 5 days a week for work.

Good question.
Knives I don't use are stored away well oiled and protected.
That's probably the main reason I don't handle them often.
My users get lot of fondling.

I tend to handle them (the unused ones) in one of three ways; a) when I'm considering buying a knife I take some out which are similar to it and handle them for a couple of days. Is the new one different enough to justify the purchase? b) category knives-sometimes I enjoy putting out my ethnic knives (higonokami, opkapi, douk-douk, etc.) and enjoy the history and culture; camping knives and thinking of how they would perform and which I would pick for various scenarios; choppers, for much the same reasons, etc. Lastly,c) because I feel like fondling one or some for the heck of it , maybe the most fun :D.

I always find it hard to understand that "knife folks" don't have a number of unused blades; but they buy often, and then sell off the ones they have in a never ending cycle.

I did that with firearms for a while (about 10 years) buying stuff just to "try out" and then selling them off within a month or so. But it was a loosing game financially unless you buy really cheap. Obviously having access to BF's selling area makes it much easier rather than being the guy in the parking lot wandering up to you wanting to sell you a knife. That happened a while back. Actually a nice slip joint, but I suspected it might be hot and he kept dropping the price every time I acted like I wasn't going to buy.

Why do you keep stuff that you may have little interest in?

If I sell them, the revenue disappears into thin air and I am left with neither knives nor money. So for me, it is a question of 1) keeping knives that I sorta like but never touch, vs. 2) an empty knife drawer. So I go with the former.

Also, I just love knives - even the ones that I have not touched in years. I just like to hoard them. And on occasion, a BF thread will rekindle my interest in one, and its fun to go back to the arsenal and start carrying it again.

If I have a knife that doesn't get used AND carried anymore, then it gets sold/gifted off. I don't have room or time in my life for stuff that I don't need and use on a regular basis.

I like to handle each one several days a week. Just to remember why I did purchase them. My wife thinks I am crazy. :)

I don't count any truck knives or junk drawer knives, but my good knives that are in the safe, every once in awhile I'll fondle each of them since some go extended periods without carry. It kinda allows me to rediscover that knife and remember why I like it. I've fondled some to convince me to keep it or I'll think about why I need to sell it.

Having my selection of 12 or so good EDCs of all shapes, sizes, and materials used, and usually carrying one for weeks at a time, allows me to rediscover and appreciate the knives I have. It's kinda like getting that new knife feeling and honeymoon all over again. I carried a small Sebenza daily most days and a Military on the weekends this year, but in the past couple weeks I've been marking hard over my Ritter Mini Grip. It's an awesome knife, and I have to find excuses to carry something else other than it.

My wife thinks I'm crazy because I talk to my knives. I kiss them goodnight and tuck them in their case. Little does she know its the voices in my head that tell me to do this so that the knife gods will not be displeased.

Yeah, that's the way it is now, but it didn't used to be that way.

Well being that I have a deskjob, most of my knives would probably count as unused. :\
