How good is J2 Steel?

My Spyderco Endura is one of the earlier models and the blade is made of J2 stainless steel.

I have had excellent service from this knife, but I just wanted to know what you guys think of the steel.

It's G-2, not J-2. It's normally left a bit softer than steels like ATS-55, which Spyderco is using now, and G-2 doesn't hold an edge quite as well, though it should be a hair tougher (I'm not sure if that's really the case though, I'm having a harder time busting the point off my ATS-55 endura than I did my g-2 models, which all have busted points). G-2 seems to be more stain-resistant. All in all, I've considered it a fine steel, but a step down from ATS-34 as far as general-use folder steels go.

Joe, what do you do with your knives that you keep busting the points...chipping cement?

G-2/GIN-1 is fairly good from what I hear.

Don't confuse it with 420-J2, which is a horrible steel for blades. Too soft, doesn't hold an edge, etc.

muzzleup, I have no idea what I do to break the points off my delicas and enduras! For years, I just expected that to happen, and once it did, I'd grind the tip to a stronger point (the delica's tip is very fine). This was back in the G-2 days. Then I stopped carrying spydercos for a while, and by the time I started again, it was an ATS-55 endura, which I still haven't broken the tip off.

When I got my first Spyderco endura A while back I broke the tip off too. Then I noticed that A guy I worked with had one and the tip was broken off of his too! I sold it and switched to other knives. I got A Native in that new steel(can't remember the name) and had good luck with it, though I sold it to buy A Microtech. Brian....wondering if this reply has anything to do with the origional thread......

Oops, it is G-2 steel. Thanks to all of you who posted responses here.

From what I read here I understand that it is ok, although not as good as the current Endura blades?

Right, G2 is good steel and makes for a good knife. But there are toehr steels out now that will perform even better.
