How hard is it to convert to scandi grind?

I have a Master Hunter. I just received my Skookum Bush Tool. I am extremely impressed with the knife and the way it cuts.

Can I convert my Master Hunter to a Scandi grind with diamond stones at home? What would be the easiest self sufficient way to to do this?

Thanks,
Lester

You might be suprised at just how much material you have to remove to make it into a full Scandi Grind !!!

I don't even see how a flat ground knife could be converted to a scandi. Maybe a sabre grind.

Why would you want to convert a MH? It has a well-earned reputation in its own right. Each well-designed, successful knife is a complex of interlocking good decisions: steel, including heat treat, size of blade, grind, handle shape. You could convert the grind on it, but if you aren't converting the blade width and the handle shape also, you aren't really making it more like a SBT.

Just to learn a little bit. I never thought about the blade width etc. It was just a thought.

I tell you what, it's a good thought, to try to do a Scandi grind on your own. Don't work off another knife, though. Get a file or another piece of steel, and make a knife blade out of it.

Ask around the Shop Talk forum to get ideas how to start, what tools you'll need.

Can't really make a scandi grind out of a flat ground knife. To do so you would need to add metal, or else make the blade much narrower.
+1 on liking how a scandi cuts though.

You need a different knife! Even if there was enough steel to work with, it would be difficult to do that much grinding and keep the temper, especially for an inexperienced worker. I would take that knife, sharpen it, oil it, and USE it :)

I convexed mine and it came out real well. Works wood as well as my scandis.
You can do it by hand with a mouse pad setup or use one of the cheap harbor freight 1" belt sanders.
I did both.
be safe...
Ted
