How has BF helped you (stories)

1. I learned about the apex and the burr. (Well, started to learn about ’em anyway. ;)).
  • My first post was in MTE wondering why the heck I couldn’t get my new S110V PM2 sharp again. Folks were quick to give sound advice.

2. I learned about buying on the secondary market, which fueled my addiction and emptied my wallet.
  • I pined for a Spyderco Southard after fondling one during a road trip that included a stop at BladeHQ—but there was no way in heck I could resolve myself to dropping $250 on a knife at the time! The Exchange solved that, and the rest is...history, I guess.

3. I learned that tiers of production existed above Spyderco, BM, & ZT (not a slam on those brands).
  • For reasons stated above, I was able to sample that tier, a few times, and I like it!

4. Coupled with personal experience, I’ve learned a few things about knife steels, HRC, grinds, etc. and that no single element defines how “good” a knife is or how well it “performs.”

5. I’ve learned that certain parts of the forum are fun to lurk, even if I don’t have the...er,...inseam...to post there regularly. :D

20 years on BFC... has it helped?

I've owned brands I never knew existed, models I'd never knew I needed, in steels I never thought possible.

I've worked with amazing custom makers I would never otherwise have met.

I've been warned about shady "businessmen" before they could screw me over, and I've been guided to some of the finest folk I could ever meet. Thanks to the Exchange, I've saved thousands of dollars on knives and gear I didn't have to buy over the counter.

But I've bought "over the counter" from BFC vendors who sometimes feel more like friends than business acquaintances.

I've thought I needed a knife until I read the reviews and tests from fellow forumites. (I've also read reviews that prompted me to buy some that I didn't realize I needed).

I give away tons of knives to friends and family... quality stuff, so they know they can depend on them. And they can bring them back to me for sharpening, as I've learned many of my maintenance skills and acquired my equipment right here on the forums.

I've forged great friendships, tempered my cutlery wants and needs, sharpened my focus on procurement, honed my maintenance and shopping skills and polished my collection to a fine luster.

Damn place has turned me into a knife.

I have not been a member of the forum long and had showcased some of my knives (KHUKURI). a little while ago I had a custom one made, a replica of a museum piece, and it had arrived without any protection around the handle and the oils they use when shipping had seeped into the handle and complety ruined it. This came from Nepal. Informed the maker and the suggested idea of sanding out the problem was not a viable solution to me. So do I go through the hassle of sending it back, at my cost too, and wait for another or a refund? So disappointed, esp' as this was going to be displayed in a box already set up, that I left it for a couple of weeks then thought considering that I am a member of a knife forum why don't I see if any advice can be given to rectify my issue. Well that's what I should have done in the first place obviously because soon as I asked, suggestions were put forward and the one I used made the handle look like there hadn't been any problem in the first place. Gratefully appreciative of this and now proudly on display in a lit display case with info details on the khukuri.
Again, Thanks

Sharpening....sharpening....sharpening...!!!

It has also helped me not own another house....as I could literally have bought one for what I have spent on knives since joining... :D

While I have been into knives (my 15 year old daughter announced I was a knife nut when introducing me to new scouts in her troop), I did not know you you could restore sharpening stones let alone flatten them. I have also picked up techniques to better sharpen my knives.

I first found this site when researching how to teach cub scouts about knife safety for their whittling chip.

Really started to read the site once I got fed up with everyone bringing up politics on other sites. I love the absce

Not to stir things up but BF has alerted me to some of the questionable people and companies in the market.

This is really valuable to me and the information is not available anywhere else.

Plus, I’ve really found a lot of the content really entertaining.
