How has your choice of EDC changed over time?

I've only been carrying a knife for a few years but my idea of what kind of EDC I like changed very quickly. I've gone from a small serrated dragonfly that I carried in the coin pocket of my jeans to a non-serrated Spyderco Dragonfly. I then decided that the Dragonfly is too small, so I switched to a CRKT Mirage Titanium, then a Kershaw mini Cyclone, then to a Spydero Persistence, then to a Stretch. Currently I am alternating the Stretch and an A.G. Russell one hand knife:

I NEVER would have guessed I'd prefer carrying a big knife like the Stretch or a toothpick like the Featherlite but there it is. I'm hoping to spring for a Sebenza eventually. How has your knife preferences changed over time?

Mine hasn't a bit, Benchmade 72x series with G-10 is perfection for me.

My first knife besides slipjoints was an emerson cqc 7 because back in the mid nineties I was reading richard marcinko stuff and he had a cqc6, which was beyond my means, but benchmade had an alternative for me. Then I wouldn't say my choices have evolved, because that might imply that I kept upgrading to better knives, but I went on to a benchmade stryker, and some other BM choices, some spydercos, and now I am a hopeless ZT fan. Hoping I can score a 0300 soon, we'll see about that, but I am so in love with my ZT 0350 and 0200. Am thankful that I have the means to keep buying nice stuff, or at least, stuff that I think is nice.

Its funny you say that. When I first got my 710 I said it ruined knife shopping for me because there was no longer anything I really needed. I carried that damn knife for years.

Since then, I've leaned towards fixed blades for my edc. Most of the time it was my Nimravus (ESEE 5 for awhile) now when I can't carry a fixed (one of my jobs) I carry a Benchmade 51 because I consider the balisong to be the best style of folding knife.

Hmmm.... Benchmade 710 replaced a mini Benchmade auto. Then I go to carrying a fixed blade which is a Benchmade Nimravus. When I can't carry the FB I carry a Benchmade 51. Now that you make me actually look over my carry history I see that, while a lot changes, one thing tends to stay the same :-)

I began with an okapi , added an opinel to the stable .. a lot of stainless knives in the same price range came , died , left
over 30 years later ... I have an okapi , a replacement opinel is on its way , someone stole the last one , but I have added another to the stable , again in the same price range , a svord peasant .
Basicly I began carrying a 3-4 inch hi carbon blade , and its all I carry nowdays ... the handles have changed some , and I no longer bum around homeless or hitch hike around the country so the uses and how much I rely on them has changed some , but essentially , the blade is the same .

Went from a Kershaw Chive to a Kershaw g10 bump :D but there were many in between, the big difference is I went from one constant EDC to Rotating through a few.

I started with a Vic SAK, Buck 110, or small non-descript slippie - then a Buck 301. One day, the range store where I worked carried new Kershaw Scallions - great EDC - eventually carried a Blur in my back pocket - the Buck 110 on occasion persisted. Then - I discovered Benchmade. The 630 Skirmish and 710 were favorites - the 755 MPR is my current fav EDC. Hard to beat. I still often carry a Vic 'Farmer' SAK - sometimes a 'dress-up' knife, too.

My EDC has changed over the years, but not that much. Mostly upgrades on my folder carry and also trading out my EDC to diffrent models more often. I also now am more inclined to carry a fix blade when possible. I also mostly carry a blade length of 3 to 4 inches, where I used to carry 2 to 2 1/2 inch models. I now only carry the smaller ones if I am going to a social function where I want to carry but not exposed.

Started out with a tiny Imperial $1 knife in 2nd grade. Moved to a larger Imperial (again $1) a couple of years later. Then a Case Barlow pattern until I was in high school when I lost it and replaced it with a case stockman. Carried that for a long time and still have it somewhere. After college, I wanted something more "office friendly" and started carrying a SAK Tinker for about 5 years, then a SAK Soldier, then a Camillus Remington Bullet knife (trapper pattern), and then back to a VIC Adventurer SAK. I carry several knives now including the Adventurer with the other knife rotated between Spydie's, a couple SOGs (Twitch II, Twitch XL, Mini-Vulcan) but the SAK gets the most use. I have several spares in case I loose it. Now I will add a GEC #36 Sunfish to the rotation. Really like the beast. I don't really choose my EDC for defensive use. They are working knives. Probably would loose if I had to use a knife in a fight. Hence carry a firearm. So YES, there has been an evolution to my EDC's.

Here's how I changed with my choice of EDC, I Devolved from my SAK to cheaper folders, then I bought more expensive folders then started to buy smaller fixed blades, then I bought my BM551 SBKSN and my CRKT Apache II so I Carry those supplemented with MY second knife, my handmade Mini-Bushcraft fixed blade.

I owned knives as a kid, but didn't always have one on me. It was my SOG Tomcat 2 that was my first real EDC. I owned a couple of 6-7" fixed blades, but only took them camping.
It was only a few years ago that I really started buying smaller fixed blades for EDC. My two favorite, right now, are my Bark River Custom Highland Special in CPM S35VN and my Fiddleback Forge EDC. I also carry a BR PSK in a pocket pouch or it's little belt sheath, and a Case canoe.

in my daily grind, my Delica is more than i ever need.

that said, i carry a keychain size Vic Companion that i could probably get by with.

less is more so i find i kerp downsizing. i probably will keep doing this until i feel the size of the knife has limited me. so far i havent got there

I started off with a couple of Boker damascus folders 1st.(I read quite a bit about the history and the process that is involved in making 300+ layers of damascus), on to

Spydies for a while, a few CRKs which I don't carry very often, a couple RJ Martin customs that I shouldn't have bought, several ZTs and Kershaws including a few

discontinued Kershaws recently including the Tyrade(3) and the Lahar. I carry Millies and a Tyrade more often than anything else along with an se Dragonfly that

I always carry in my lr pocket. The last few days I've been carrying my lg. 21 seb.

I have others in the mix too including some that I shouldn't have bought.

Very good subject for a thread BTW.

I used to think serrated edges were awesome and the bigger the blade the better the knife. My tastes and understanding have really changed. Now I prefer plain edge, < 3" blade length for my ideal EDC.

Serveral of you guys mention you have switched to a fixed blade, not to get off-topic but do you usually carry those hidden? and how so?

When I was a kid I had some kind of slip joint, then SAKs, Buck styled lockblades, one handers, neck knives and, finally, back to slip joints.

I wasn't one of the ones that mentioned this earlier, but my biggest EDC change over 55+ years of carryin' has been switching from folders to fixed blades. I find that I now prefer fixed blades that are between 6.25" & 7" OAL, with a 2.5 to 3" blade. I use ESEEs, BRKs, and BHKs mostly. I carry mine either in a pocket sheath in my RFP (or inside coat pocket if I'm dressed up), or in a crossdraw sheath at about 10:00. During the week, my T-shirts or sweatshirts are always out covering my waistband so it's well hidden. The biggest reason for the change is that I don't have to worry about opening, locking, cleaning pivots, blade centering, loose screws, etc. Just pull it, use it, and put it back. And high quality blade steels are usually less expensive in a FB than in a folder.
