How has your taste in knives evolved since your first knife as an enthusiast?

hahaha i went from small knives like a dragonfly to bigger knives and now i'm a total balisong whore i already caved and bought an older t latch benchmade 42 XD greatest knife ever though weighs so little has all the strength of a bali and gets soooo sharp i love it even more than my para 2

I gotta admit my tastes are all over the place particularly after going back to work in the restaurant industry, I find my self going after old school French kitchen knives quite a bit. On the non kitchen spectrum far less tactical for the most part and trying to get the most for my dollar.

I have gone from puukko shovinist to broader-based taste. Such as discovering balisongs for myself.

I’ve always carried a knife as far back as I can remember, I would save up my money and buy the nicest folder I could afford at the local hardware store, no idea what brand but it was brass and wood, I was probably about 6 at the time. Moved to Swiss army knives, man those were sharp, cut my leg cutting a crab apple far from home, walked home while my sock and shoe filled with blood, 21 stiches, 11 internal, I was 12. Went to a cutlery store and was fascinated by butterfly knives, wanted a Balisong had to settle for a $10 cheapy, was about 16. Fast forward about 20 years and bought one of the first A/O Kershaw openers, was like a Jack in the box, flick, hey a knife, repeat. Fast forward another 10 years minus a few days I received my new Balisong 51 (Benchmade, what a stupid name for a Balisong co.), felt like a kid on Christmas morning when the Santa dressed in brown arrived with my new knife, finally. Just received a ZT 300, what a stupid, overweight, over built, tank of a knife, I love it.

You guys are very fortunate to have such vast variety of knives to choose from, if it’s metal and pointy, it’s good. :)

I've pretty much just become more particular with what I want. In the beginning, I bought something that was a good value and looked cool. Since then, I've been paying more and more attention to steels, deployment methods, size, blade shape etc. I've also been spending more . Now, I'm getting more into high-end productions- kershaw's more expensive stuff, Strider, CRK, and i'm currently looking to get my first Emerson (and hopefully an XM-18). I still haven't had much interest at all in traditionals though. Never have been ever since I started. I have maybe 3 traditional pieces in my entire collection.

Wow! Talk about back from the dead after 3 years :D

Update - Almost every knife I own and carry today are $200 to $600 now, all manual and mostly frame locks. I tried a few customs but am giving that up now until I get a Demko and perhaps a couple others from makers who have been builiding knives for a "long time" only. I also have trended to larger, stout, apt knives, save for a few light carry knives for those occasions. Overall, my knives are high end productions/mid techs now - fewer knives but more monetary value - I guess we never stop evolving within this community and hobbie ;)

Gotta love it, the pain of buying them and the joy of carrying them . . .

My uncle who I hunted with all the time when in was a kid gave me a yellow case trapper and in just played with it for day's. I actually still have scars from that knife. Anyway. My grandfather took me to a hunting store a few days later and bought me a buck slip joint. From the time I was like 6-17 I got slip joints evey time I got them at the flea market or auctions regardless of makers but the case yellows were my favorites. Then when I turned 19 joined here and now insist here with and now I sit here with an Emerson in pocket.
