How heavy is "too heavy"?

I have seen some really great knives but they're just too heavy for my taste (the Spyderco Chinook for example).

So, what's the maximun weight you will tolerate in an EDC folder?

Allen.

If the knife is sitting in my pocket, unclipped, anything over 1.5 ounces is a bit heavy for me. Anything over 2.5 ounces won't make it in there (at the office)

On the weekend, my pocket can take maybe a 3 or 3.5 ounce knife.

Clipped, the weight is irrelevant. In fact, the heavier the better. I like feeling the knife and knowing it is there, rather than wondering if it has jumped off and is lost.

I agree, with clip weight is not so important, esp. if clipped to belt or in jeans, cargo pants or khakis pockets. Office slacks back pocket can take weight too, maybe nothing more than 3-1/2 oz. in the front pocket, though. My usual carry is a large Seb or Spyderco Wegner, I like the feel of their weight- very "robust"- in my pocket or belt.

I carry a large Sebenza clipped to my front pocket and its gotten so I don't even realize its there. Now I've also got a TOPS Magnum and there's no way I could carry that in my pocket...I'd end up walking tilted to one side.

Since I rarely ever wear a belt, too heavy would be something that makes my pants fall down... I know it sounds stupid, but that's actually what I go by.

I don't care about the weight as long as it's heavy enough to weight my pants down.
I prefer not to know the blade is there, but generally it doesn't really matter.

I carry MY Spyderco Chinook as one of my EDC folders. I guess that since I'm a pretty big guy (5'11", 265 lbs), I really don't find it too hard carrying this 7.28 oz folder all day, without collapsing under its' weight.:).

Since the dawn of Spydies, I've grown to hate weight. Give me a frn Endura anyday. I sold off my Buck Ranger and Schrade LB7 because I can't stand heavy knives. It might be different if I lived in a different climate, but I don't like belt pouches and I live in the heat, so I'm usually in shorts. As far as slipjoints go, I draw the line at about a SAK Spartan. The only knife I'll carry around on a belt sometimes is my Leatherman Wave.

I've carried clipped folders from the Spyderco Dragonfly to the large Seb and BM710HS, Commander, etc., and a bunch in between. I really don't notice the weight at all.
I got rid of almost all my folders, leaving me with a DDR CF EDC w/3.5" blade, and a 710HS w/3.9" blade. The smaller knives didn't carry any more conveniently, so I might as well have the extra blade length.
When carrying a knife loose in the pocket, weight and size become a much bigger issue for me, and a Victorinox Recruit is about as big and heavy as I'll go.

I also carry a Chinook EDC. I notice the knifes substantial feel in my hand and that secures me. Clipped in the pocket, the knife's weight seems to disappear. Ofcourse I also carry either a Glock 27 and two spare mags or a S&W 642-1 5 shot snub with two 6 shot speed strip reloaders. Though these guns are very light for pistols, they far outweigh the Chinook. When I carry the Chinook and pepper spray alone (very seldomly) The weight is still not noticable. I am average build...6'0 215 lbs. Chris

I agree that some weight is better to hold the knife where it belongs and to let you know it is still there. In addition, I find that shorter knives with clips seem to want to get pushed out of my pocket more than a bit longer models. I took the clip off my Calypso Jr and carry it in the bottom of my pocket because I found it wanted to work it's way up and out of my pocket when clipped. However, some models like the Miliary sometimes hit the leg when sitting and that can be a bit uncomfortable but that is only when wearing tighter pants.

If you are unable to swim hard enough to keep your ahead above water you should have brought a lighter knife. :D

I also like the Spyderco FRN models for ease of carry. The Military is also very light for a blade of its size.

I carry a Sifu and a Chinook regularly so folder weight means little to me.

The only time a knife's weight starts to matter is while carrying around a large fixed blade on one's belt. Hauling around an Ontario Spec-Plus Marine Raider Bowie or a big honkin' Khukuri all day long will start you to thinking maybe an all Titanium knife isn't such a bad idea after all.

Folder weight doesnt really bother me at all, i mean i carry a 21" ASP as part of my EDC so a folder really aint noting in comparison. The folders i own tend to be a little heavy, my EDC rotates between a CRKT M18(light), PCKS 110(heavy). That and im fairly big, 5'11 200lbs.

In dress clothes, I won't let it go heavier than a small Seb (about 3.5 oz.) Generally, the dressier the lighter the knife has to be, but in "office casual" the small seb is fine. In my street clothes it will go up to the large seb at 5.5 oz., or even a heavier fixed blade. I wear a folder IWB, so weight is a little less of a concern than it is when the knife is clipped to a pocket.

Now this is a point I failed to address. In dress clothes I do tend to want a lighter carry. Mainly because where dress up is required my dress clothes tend to be of finer and lighter materials so consequently I need my carry knives to be lighter too. A William Henry, BM/Osborne collab., or even the large Spyderco Calypso with Micarta scales works for me.
The gentlemen's type folders get the nod in this scenario.

What ZENGHOST said.

Strider GB is my EDC now and I never notice it. 'Course I also carry a Colt Pocket Nine and a spare mag, too.

My EDCs:
1. Small Sebenza (clipped to front right pocket)
2. Leatherman Wave (Back left pocket)

I have grown used to the weight of the LM Wave which makes the small Sebby a super lightweight! 8-9 oz. at the heaviest (per pocket :) ) works best for me!

The large Classic Sebenza has been my regular carry for the past year. Day in and day out. Work clothes or dress clothes, it is always there. I was a large knife nut at one time, I'm still fairly large but my knives have shrunk!:D

On occassion I still carry a large knife, which would be a Camillus Cuda MAXX. Even with it I have no trouble carrying it in work clothes but for dress clothes the Sebenza comes out of the belt sheath it is riding in and back in my right front pocket it goes. Guess I'm implying that the large Sebenza is the largest knife I carry on a routine basis.

Now that large Carson mdl 16 that's arriving in the morning might be a different story.................... :D
