How high do your knives sit in pocket?

I am lookinng for some comparison on how high your knives sit in your pocket. Here's a picture of the ones I have:

DSC00017.jpg

From left to right: Kershaw Blackout, Leek, Chive, Coldsteel Voyager, Spyderco Endura, Benchmade 942, 910, 806 and 530.
The lowest riding knives in here are the Blackout, 910 and 806. And the highest riding ones are the Voyager, Endura and 530.

Thanks!

Funny, how one of the smallest Benchmades (that 530) shows so much more than one of the largest (that 806)!

The ones that convert from tip-up to tip-down and vice-versa can complicate matters. For instance, switch that BM 806 to tip-up, and you'll have over an inch of pointy handle sticking out.

Want a real discreet carry? I've got a SOG Flash II, the clip inserts into the rear of the handle; clipped to a pocket, all you see is the dull gray clip. Or even better: I'm reviewing a Spyderco UK Penknife that rides almost as deep as the SOG, but the clip is made from a dark-finished wire, and is nearly invisible.

On those rare occasions when I see a knife clipped to someone's pocket besides mine (I live in the People's Republic of New Jersey, and work in a corporate HQ), I try to figure what they're packin'; that 530 would be damn easy to ID, as would the Cold Steel, and of course the Spyderco barrel nut is hard to miss.

My Spyderco Atlantic Salt rides about 3/4" above the pocket (about the same as the Endura)and it's bright yellow to boot.
I don't mind because it's easy to get out of my pocket and, around here, about every blue-collar guy carries a pocket-clip folder.
So a pocket-clip does'nt even raise an eyebrow.

Allen.

I have a Gerber folder that doesn't show at all (other than the clip, of course) when clipped in a pocket. Unfortunately, this is one of the few positive aspects of the knife...

Ya know, I keep hearing things like that... I have both a Combat and Covert, and both of 'em are flawless.

The Combat is too big for daily use (unless you moonlight as a covert operator, I guess), but mine locks up solid as a rock, unlike many. Mine's a First Production specimen, guess Gerber's QA has slipped since then.

The Covert is a much more practical size, and as you point out, has a very nice discreet carry; but where I live and work, the dagger-style blade tends to attract unfavorable attention. Otherwise, I'd carry mine more often! The handle is one of the thinnest, most compact and comfortable I've seen on a knife that size.

My Large Sebbie, SOCOM Elite, Benchmade Mini darkstar and benchmade sentinel all ride extremely well and very low.

However what's probably worst of anything I EDC is the Benchmade TSEK(I think that's 805). My TSEK is pre-production and doesn't have the option for tip-down carry so a good bit of pointy handle sticks out. I usually carry it clipped to my back pocket for this reason, it feels very natural there actually. All around it's an awesome folder though.

All time worst is my Vanquero Grande, but I don't EDC that bad boy anyway. It does feel very good in the pocket, but sticks out a lot.

You don't want to see how a tip-down Woodard Fer De Lance sits in the pocket.

Mine locks up solid as well. I've done some abusive things with it too and seen the blade bend quite a bit, but the lock didn't slip. I have the mini covert. It's not a bad knife for the money, but I prefer tip up carry and I'm left handed too, so it doesn't sit well with me. The handle is also a tad small on the smallest version. The Covert has a 154CM blade, while mine is 420HC, I think. Maybe I came across as being too damning of the knife. I don't dislike the knife, but I like my Native better, for example.

The UK Penknife *disappears* in the pocket. Most of the time you can't even see the knife, just the very end of it.

Unfortunately the clip doesn't stay like this: On mine the dark finish has all but worn off, so the clip is clearly visible now. But then it doesn't really look like a knife clip ...:D

If you want a low riding big knife the 6" Ti-Lite from Cold Steel has one of the lowest riding clips of all of the knives that I own (and is lower than almost all of my 2' folders)

Ah!! Not familiar with the Mini version. From your photo, I couldn't tell the diff.

Fair enough. :)

Guess my point is, the later model Combat's have a lousy QC record, and of course there's Gerber's business practices to consider... but IMHO the Covert is a pretty underappreciated knife.

I think this brings up an interesting point. How much does the height of the knife as it rides in your pocket really matter? (within reason)... I mean, if I see a clip on somebody's pocket, I like to play the guessing game, and it's not always easy. But one thing's always obvious, no matter how low the knife sits, the clip always gives away the fact that it's a knife. This may seem incredibly obvious, but I'm trying to make a choice. You can get a low rider, like a Sere2k, or an RRF, or even the superknife (sk2, I think), all three virtually disappear into the pocket, except for the clip, which gives away the existence of the knife, always. So that's my question, is the 'covert' low riding nature of certain folders, really that big of a deal? Just playing Devil's Advocate again...

I like low-riding clips. The nicest cheap clip I've found is on the BM mini-Pika. I've taken several of these clips and placed them on other knives. Works great on a Griptilian, but works best on the Ares. You can't even see the knife when it rides in the pocket, and the clip is so unobtrusive that it looks like a pen:
