How high do your knives sit in pocket?

Thanks! Hope the photo quality isn't too bad, the lighting is not too well when this photo was taken.
I've taken some measurement on the knives:
Voyager: 7/8"
Endura: 3/4"
530: 11/16"
942: 5/8"
Leek: 5/8"
Chive: 5/8"
910: 1/2"
806: 7/16"
Blackout: 7/16"

After measuring, I find that ones that are less than 5/8" are the easiest to carry, since I put the knife in my phone pocket on my pants which have a flap. So anything over will have trouble closing.

Wondering, anyone got a measurement for the Gunting? :D

Swamp Rat Rat Trap sticks out a little over 1/4 inch. Cuda Maxx 7.0 about 1/2 inch
That's very low for a knife of that size!

The nicest cheap clip I've found is on the BM mini-Pika.
Great photos! Now let's see if I can buy the clips by itself. 530 will benefit from it alot.

I think this brings up an interesting point. How much does the height of the knife as it rides in your pocket really matter? (within reason)
Well, the whole idea of a pocket clip is to carry a knife in a manner that is not concealed, so as not to violate the law in most jurisdictions, so there's some limit to how "discrete" you can get.

On the other hand, in some places you wouldn't want to have so much knife showing that it's obvious to all sheeple and/or LEOs. In particular, where strict blade lengths are on the books, you might not want so much showing that a LEO could determine the make and model with enough certainty as to provide "probably cause" to detain you, and/or your knife.

So that's my question, is the 'covert' low riding nature of certain folders, really that big of a deal? Just playing Devil's Advocate again...

The way I see it, people who want a low riding clip just for the fact that it makes it slightly less obvious that they're carrying a knife probably shouldn't be carrying a knife to begin with.

You (in the general sense) shouldn't want the end of the handle sitting even with the edge of the pocket at all. You need a little handle above the pocket to grab onto when taking the knife out. If you want the knife to be invisible, go clipless. That was one of the many reasons I didn't like the SOG Flash II, it sat TOO low, I had a hell of a time getting it out.

I like lower riding clips just for the fact that it adds a little more security. When more handle is in the pocket, there's less of a chance that it'll get caught on something and fall out. I've never lost a knife that was clipped in my pocket, but it's always a concern when you're moving around all day.

I couldn't care less who knows I carry a knife... I carry and use legally and responsibly. Let the sheep think what they will, it's no concern of mine.

Interesting idea, Gryffin. I hadn't really thought of that. Though I live in a place with few restrictions on the carrying of knives, I can see where this might come into play in other more sheeplicious municipalities. It almost seems like a technicality, but laws are usually full of those:mad: , and it could mean the difference between suffering some inconvenience with the fuzz, something much much worse.

You obviously live somewhere the sheeple don't outnumber you 1000-to-1. Congrats on that.

For the rest of us who, for reasons of family and/or employment, don't have that luxury, but wish to carry a knife legally and responsibly, discretion is a must.

What, you grab just the little bit of handle that sticks out, and draw the knife that way? How often have you dropped one?

You've got an opposable thumb, use it! ;) No matter how deeply the knife is, you should be able to draw it by shoving your thumb in your pocket, and pulling it out with thumb friction against the handle, along with pulling on the clip with a finger or two. I've got a SOG Flash II too, and never had a problem yet.

I don't grasp the end of my knife when I pull it out. I reach in my pocket and pull it out holding it like you would if you were going to flick it open, thumb already on the stud/hole. This is why I like tip up carry myself. Also, when carrying IWB, I find that if a knife sticks out too much, it pokes me when i bend over to pick something up or move around. That's where I really prefer a low riding knife, and a slimmer one too.

I guess so. Lucky me.

No, of course I don't grab the tip end of the knife, but it gives a reference point to where the knife is. But it's all personal preference. I like my knives to ride around a quarter and half inch out of the pocket.
