how hot does a KM-24D really get?

i'm set to purchase a paragon KM-24D and am hoping that i can also use it to melt copper on occasion...i know the published high temp for the KM-24D is 2000 degrees; can i really count on it to get that high? or higher? copper's melting point is 1981 degrees so there's not a lot of room for error here...wondering if anyone here has actually taken theirs up that high...

Why are you looking to melt copper in an electric kiln?
are you looking to make mokume?

It will go that high - it's set to top out at 2000F from the factory, it will go higher, but I don't know if they use fire bricks that are rated for anything more than that. Many stainless steels heat treat in the 1900's, some over 2000, so you'd be hearing about it if the kiln wouldn't get that hot.

The EvenHeats will go to 2200.

Rob!

now you've got me looking at the evenheats...the last time i looked into the paragon vs. evenheat debate (years ago) i got the impression that they're both just as good, but the paragons are built a bit heavier/sturdier so i figured i'd go with the paragon...but at a price difference of $300-400, maybe i should reconsider the evenheats...

i don't want to start another "what's the best heat treat oven" thread, but if anyone wants to chime in on paragon vs. evenheat, i'd appreciate the feedback...

I'm a jeweler, you do not want to try using your kiln to melt metal, torches work better for small melts, foundries for truly huge melts, try melting copper in an electric kiln you will make verdigris as it will oxidize first. If you are looking for a kiln for use in lost wax casting the burnout cycles never go above 1350, many simpler plaster based investments do not go over 1200

I take ats34 to 1975 degrees before quench after a 40 min. soak at that temp, and
just now am thinking about changing my first set of elements after 12 years. Evenheat
and Paragon both make great ovens, mine happens to be an Evenheat. Take sunshadows
advice and don't melt metal in heat treat ovens.
Ken.

when I bought my kmd45 from paragonkilns.com they put 2300 degree coils no charge. I saved enough getting it from them to pay for the shipping and still came out a couple hundred under msrp.

We have both Evenheat and Paragon ovens. I like the fact that the Evenheat door swings to the side instead of down at the front like the Paragon does. Reaching in over a door that is nearly 2000 degrees requires attention to what you are doing and long tongs. Paragon also seems to run past a set temperature by a good bit before cooling back down to the temp that it is set for. Both are good for what they do, just a little different.
