How I Became a Knife Steel Metallurgist

Thank you for a great article!

I toured Dixie with my son last summer and really liked it. He may martriculate there next summer.

I also began university studies at a small-ish campus and progressed through “higher” education with a young wife, and little money. Your story brought back many memories.

Best wishes for your continued succes and happiness!

Hey Larrin I have read on Bladeforums and elsewhere that stainless steels have lower toughness than carbon steel because of the chromium
How does chromium decrease toughness? Through the formation of carbides?

Up to 5% or so chromium it increases toughness if anything. At higher amounts you start to form excess carbides. It is difficult to balance carbon and chromium when you have 13%+ Cr in a stainless steel. Because of the very high toughness of AEB-L that we measured I don’t think there is any inherent reduction in toughness by adding Cr.

Yeah today and yesterday are now the most popular days on my website ever.
The most traffic came after the onset and conclusion of a lively discussion started by a good article posted by you.

Maybe not totally causal but quite possibly correlated.

Ha! Hacker News brought a couple orders of magnitude more visitors than bladeforums ever has.
