How I like to sharpen knives...

I second the Thanks! I have bookmarked this one... especially since I have been meaning to buy a belt grinder for just this purpose!

Was that edge up or down? I sharpen the same way with edge up. I just couldn't tell. Good video. I enjoyed it alot.

Very cool! i hope you do more tutorial's for us..,nice and clear with good sound  to cool!

Would sharpening edge up create a potentially dangerous situation in that the belt might grab and throw the knife?

Thanks for the video Jon, nice to see how other folks do it.

therulebookman - Some folks sharpen edge up, but it could catch the blade, especially if you sharpen on a wheel. Also, depending on your belt, you will knock the grit off with the edge.

Do you buy or make the leather belts?

Tess makes mine but, they have them here... http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.a...,43072&p=48040

Yes, as far as I'm concerned as rolled and convex edge are the same. Rolling an edge (action) is making your convex edge (result).

I feel safer sharpening edge down, just my preference and what I show folks who come to the shop

It's just J.

Thanks guys. Hope this helps some, that's what it's all about.

Great job J. Is there a reason you go with the one inch belts as opposed to the 2" belts? Can't wait to try this out.
Ed
Also can't wait to try out the finishing tip.
Thanks!
Ed

I find it more comfortabe to get around the archs of certain blade shapes with a 1" belt. A 2" belt would work fine for most edge profiles as well.

So you mean to tell me I've been doing it the hard way ;) . Awsome vid. I'm going to have to try that. By the way thats a great clip on cleaning up usage on a working knife.
