How I like to sharpen knives...

Thanks for that vid. I've read about how to do it but seeing the video really puts it together.

Good job on the tutorial!
I get the wire edge the same way but take it off on the buffer. The leather belt sounds safer. I'll give it a try. How does Tess join the leather belt into a loop?

You'll like the belt Larry. It doesn't change you blades finish at the edge. She uses "Leather Weld" for the joint.

thanks for the video. very helpful. how do I get started on buying a belt sander? any suggestions links? how much would it cost? rpm? what about the belt? is it 320grit that you use?

how about convexed edges? or zero edges?

thanks J.

The tool in the vid is a Baldor 1" x 42". I don't know the model number (I've had the machine for a long time now) but, most knife catalogs have them. On a hobbyist's budget I'd get one from Grizzly. Something like this... http://www.grizzly.com/products/G1013

I use a 200 grit belt and convex the edge before sharpening.

I have this basic setup (minus the 220 grit belt) and have never been able to achieve hair popping sharpness on the convex edges I have sharpened. I have a number of very fine grit (15 micron and similar) belts and a leather belt, and for whatever reason, I could get them sharp, just not hair popping sharp. Call me "Mr. Lack of Talent" I guess. :(

So, not willing to settle for less, I bought a 220 grit belt yesterday. It cost all of $2. Today, I tried this method on a Cold Steel knife I had. It is my practice knife that I play with when I need to practice my sharpening skills (or lack of skills maybe :p ). It felt very sharp, but was not hair popping sharp.

Long story short, 220 grit belt followed by leather belt loaded with some green compound from Lee Valley and WOW!!! The hair is literally jumping off my arm. I am still in shock. I really haven't done anything different than what I was doing before. It's just that now, this knife is amazingly sharp. I can't believe it...I must be asleep and dreaming. Unreal!!!

So, thanks for a great video. Simple and extremely efficient. Oh, and my wife thanks you for the bald patches I now have on my left arm!

Just FYI, the 1x30" belt sander that I use came from Harbor Freight for about $35. If all you do is hobbyist occasional sharpening, it is more than enough. Plus, you can burn through about 4 of them before getting to the cost of the G. Good luck!

Fantastic OtE, I'm glad it helped. I just got a new catalog for Harbor Freight and that same 1x30 was on sale for $30.00.

I would like to try this!! I have a 2 X 42" craftsman, I can only find leather belts in 1 X 42". Anyone know where 2 X 42" leather belts can be found? Would cork belts work in a similar fashion??
