How I make axe handles

I probably wouldn't torch it, it could cause checking by drying it out too fast. There shouldn't be any problems as long as you dry it slowly.

As far as oiling, I don't actually oil my axe handles. Eventually the wood develops its own sort of "patina" and that is pretty protective. I think it has to do with the oils from your hands (I always chop without gloves).

I love seeing a work bench that looks like mine does most of the time ;-))) Great tutorial GPig, very inspiring, thanks for posting.

Best regards

It's simply the sign of a creative genius, that's all. :D At least that's what I tell my wife about my work bench....

Well seems to be a nice thing to spent spare time. I gonna try it out, when I have time. I usually use a friend of mine´s wood-drilling-machine. Experience showed me, that the handles you can buy in stores is not as durable and tough as the own-hand-made-ones.

Kind regards

Ain't it the truth ;-))
I think a work bench thread would be fun ;-)) Hopefully the mod wouldn't move it ;-(

That's a great idea. If that kind of thing is not allowed here, maybe we should request an ATH subforum for "watercooler" chatter. The ATH forum is a community within itself, so there should be a way for us to do that kind of thing.

Not sure how I missed this, but well done. Yet another skill I do not possess, nor the tools. This seems like a rewarding project. Like what you did. Thanks for the instructions and write up, much appreciated.

great to watch the process with hand tools! i only have a cheap rasp, electric plane and jigsaw at my disposal but that spoke shave would save me a tonne of time ill have to ask my grandma if she has one in the workshop i can use..

great thread!

Great post. I love the old tools. Are you using the vise instead of the shaving horse because of weather or do you like it better?
